It's often for colors requiring more layers, like pearl finish and the likes. Not saying it's worth $500-600 more, but it's often the reason for it...

Actually GM (and pretty much any other manufacturer) charges extra on almost all their vehicles for premium/specialty paints like 'tricot' and other metallic paints. Even the Chevy spark has a premium paint option. In fact at this price point you will routinely find other manufacturers charging thousands extra for optional colors.
