Iam ordering the black wheels (Q6U) and have noticed that there are some folks that say these wheels will scratch very easily. I have read where a person should "powder coat" them. That means having your dealership take them off the tires, powder coat, and put back on and rebalance, etc etc. For some reason that sounds quite "expensive". Are there any better ideas out there for taking care of them????? I don't really "understand" why they are harder to take care of than the silver painted or black machined ones. Would love to get some good advice. THANK YOU. Why wouldn't the factory have powdercoated them if thats what they really needed????
I have not heard of this. Its almost like when some people spray paint their calipers RED opposed to getting the factory units. They scratch and chip and the factory do not. I cant see how/why the wheel would scratch unless your driving up on curbs and stuff?
No special care required for black wheels. I have several sets on different vehicles (including my ZR1) and have had no issues. As long as you're not scrubbing them with something abrasive, you won't have any problems. Of course, this holds true for any wheel, regardless of color.
I use a product called Sonax, which helps to prevent brake dust from sticking to the wheel. One of the reasons I ordered a Z07, was because the CCB'S aren't nearly as bad as steel rotors for dust.

Good luck!
I think your ZR1's are powder coated. GM went to painting them with the C7.

Sorry, I thought the OP was talking about whether the color black scratched more than other colors.
But, I didn't realize that GM paints their vette wheels. My stock comp gray's were on the ZR1 for about 5 minutes before replacing them with black HRE P40SC's...which are indeed powder coated.
In any case, I would buy a set of quality aftermarket wheels that are powder coated, before messing around with trying to powder coat stock painted wheels. I've had powder coated wheels re-blasted and found that just enough material is taken off, so the center cap won't fit tight...and subsequently falls out.
If the OP doesn't want to spend the dough, then just ride on the stock wheels...painted or not.
