Default Trunk question

Is the trunk (the part where the tail lights and plate holder sit on) made of plastic like the previous corvette or is it metal?

Thanks.

No metal body panels on a Corvette. The rear fascia will be composite plastic.

What is Corvette Summer? What are you talking about?

Can someone answer my question? I have never owned a Corvette before and I don't know much about them, so please forgive my ignorance.

I think the roof, hood, floor, and front fenders are carbon fiber. The rest of the body is composite plastic. Maybe I missed something.

The solid roof and hood on the StingRay are carbon fiber; fenders are composite. I am not sure on the Z06 fenders.

On the C7 Z06 only the roof panel and hood are CF.

On the C6 Z06 the fenders, and floor panels are CF, also.

The rear bumper cover, where lights and plate are mounted, is made of a flexible material just like most cars. The metal bumper is behind this cover, same for the front of car.

I thought the C6 had balsa floors and the C7 is CF. With the C7 you get the carbon floor but you don't get the carbon fenders.

The C6 Z06 has carbon fiber floor panels with balsa center, the C7 Z07 has composite floor panels.

You mean this. I don't see anywhere stating it has CF floor panels on the 2015 Z06.

"C7’s use of materials includes a standard carbon-fiber hood and roof panel, supplied by Plasan Carbon Composites’ new Walker, MI, plant. Plasan has innovative manufacturing processes that shatter previous autoclave-type processing times, getting per-part processing down to 17-min machine cycles. For more detail, read this AEI article.

The unique balsa-wood-sandwich floor construction of the C6 Corvette has been superseded on C7 by a new carbon nano-composite floor pan that is lighter while maintaining strength and stiffness, said Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter.

C7’s front fenders, doors, rear quarter panels, and the rear hatch panel are made with lighter-density sheet molding compound (SMC) than the previous generation. The door outer panel measures 1.2 mm (0.047 in) thick and the inner panel 0.8 mm (0.031 in). Combined, the body materials and their design/engineering save approximately 37 lb (17 kg) vs. the C6 body structure."

"When people need a material that’s strong yet lightweight, they usually look to carbon fiber. In the near future, however, they may instead choose to go with composite materials made from stretched carbon nanotubes. These materials could theoretically offer the same strength as carbon fiber at one-tenth the weight, or the same weight at ten times the strength. Researchers from North Carolina State University have recently succeeded in creating such a composite."

Give me plastic if it has better properties than carbon fiber. After all that's why people originally loved carbon fiber.

How do you feel exposing that outdated carbon fiber roof, interior, and aero?
