It is interesting that a driver can not just push a button but rather has the transmission activate track mode with certain driving characteristics....

Without knowing exactly how the track or performance mode operates it is hard to tell why it is not user selectable. I could see where it might not be street friendly.
It is probably a little harder on the drive train so GM is limiting it to the 1 or 2 % that will track the car.

Very possible...Hopefully there will be more than 2 modes (user selectable or not) to accommodate various driving situations.

Don’t know the exact parameters. I read (cant recall where) it had something to do with lateral G forces, steering angles, braking forces and time at wide open throttle within so many seconds. And the driver selector must be in track mode. You are correct the parameters have to be met. This is 1 reason I thought it funny all the guys were bashing the A8 when compared to the PDK. But none could tell you how to get it into its most aggressive algorithm “the track mode" and what the indication was to confirm it was in "track mode".
