Default Lawdogg149's Road Atlanta Review #2

Well another great day at road atlanta.

Went out for a 1 day event with tracks unlimited. I was asked to come by some GTR guys that wanted to see what the Zo6 had. Well lets just say it was way more car than they thought it was.

Day started off bad. Temps were at 30 degrees and during the warm up session a full on race car Acura blew a oil line and oil went all the way starting at the beginning of the apex through turn 1. Then the car stopped on the track leaving oil everywhere. The track crew did the best you could do with a that much oil everywhere. Later in on a Ultima GTR blew a engine going into turn 7 throughout the whole turn as well. This indeed messed up any chance for some really good lap times. Our first session out was cut short due to the cleanup and not much heat could be gotten in the tires.

Second session I was able to start in the middle of the pack. And behind me was a 2015 Porsche GT3. Let me just say that car was beautiful. The owner was a very experienced driver and was with one of the top performance shops in the Atlanta. I had a passenger friend of mine whom loves tracking just doesn't have a car. Thats just what I love to do is let others experience the track that would maybe never get a chance to do.

We started out our first few laps a little slower due to the cold tires. I let the porsche go on by since he was indeed on me. My tires were still showing only warm and I had started at 30 psi. These tires take a good bit of time to warm up usually around 4 laps. I just so happened to put a go pro on my rear suction mount facing rearward. Good thing.

We both ran very good only getting caught up in traffic every time we would get going good we would run into another slower car. Once we finally had about a half of a lap clear track we were able to really compare the two cars. Again this was never discussed between us prior to the session. As it can be seen both of these cars are very capable cars. Both pulled very well through the turns and down the straights.

Indeed he was the better driver of the two of us but Im sure the corvette was the better car. Hence during our session I could easily pull him back in. Some may take that opinion differently let the videos do the talking. Also note we were only running 1:40 sec laps. I know that during the rest of the day I was in the 1:35 to 1:36 times.

After a few hard laps I noticed the tires began to become slick. I even comment to the passenger about it. After making the pass and going into turn six the rear of the car stepped out on me. It was a very controllable spin that just 180*. I was running the car at this time in sport 2. I immediately went to the pits and checked pressures. Sure enough 40 psi in the rear and 42 psi in the front.

The rest of the days sessions i honestly felt like a super hero. Passing everything on the track. Many C5 zo6 race cars of all sorts were there and many got passed by a Stock Z06 on street tires. Had a few owners come over and congratulate me on the car and my driving. But I did feel like a black sheep. You could sense the either jealousy or shock that many had never would of thought that a stock Zo6 would perform so well. Even the GTR guys wouldn't say much. I had several sessions were drivers would intentionally pit out when I would start to gain on them.

The days temps were close to 50* so no it wasn't hot enough to tell if were going to have any overheating issues. I did however remove the weather strip below the windshield that seals the hood. It allowed about a 1 inch gap on the cowl area. I feel like this help with oil temps since you could actually see the heat traveling up the windshield.

Best lap time:
1:35.06 (had many 1:35 laps throughout the day)

Max temps:
Coolant: 216 degrees
Oil: 262 degrees
Trans: 243

Never did I feel the car would pull any power. I even went out for the last full hour session ran the car empty pulled into the pits refueled at the track $9.99 a gallon gas and went back out. Most of my fastest lap times were later in the sessions around laps 8 to 10. All were done with a passenger. Seems this car likes the extra weight on the right side. I did run most of the hour session alone and could only get 1:36 laps.

PS. NO GTR NISMO SHOWED UP!!! MAYBE HE GOT THE CALL THAT THERE WAS AMERICAN MUSCLE THERE TEARING IT UP!!!!

Yea it was 98 octane. Only option I had at the moment. Didn't want to lose out the last 20 mins. Felt like I was out there alone.

Was indeed robbery.

Thanks again for the review and videos. Awesome. Which driving mode were you in? In some PDR videos it seems to show on screen. Maybe relatedly, your video shows a lot of blinking "Car with squiggly lines" icon, which I assume is nanny intervention. Can you feel the car stepping out and correcting when it flashes, or does it flash when it is doing subtle "touch-up" type corrections?

Just curious about you experience with the various PTM modes.

wow, lots of slow cars that wait waaaayyyyy too long for the point-by's.

looked like fun though, track season up north is till 3 months away

My GT3 should be here tomorrow, but forecast is for 6 more inches of snow tonight, on top of the 3 feet still in my yard.

I need to move down south or out west

That was an absolute sweet run in seeing exactly what the Z06 is made of and you got lucky as hell to have the GT3 to run with. He was as proud of that car as you were of yours and you could see that he absolutely wanted to rule the track until there was no choice but to let you move ahead. Your spin...not the tires at all... but rather the sweet feeling of enthusiasm that overtakes us all. Beautiful run and very envious from the great cold North my friend! I could just picture the smile on his face and he saying 'Gotcha' when ya spun and he realized all was ok. Would have been a great guy to sit and compare notes with a beer after the run.

This was probably one of the best comparable video runs/reviews I have seen yet though. You quote him as being the better driver (in your opinion) yet he cannot lie into the corners as you can and, just as we are seeing in several videos now, this is the Z06s sweet spot. What this car can do in turns just can't be equaled by cars well above its price tag.

Man oh man this wait is killing me!

EDIT: I just watched the rear view and gotta wonder if he picked your pocket on that pass so close into the turn. Did you expect is or did you wave him by?

Man that was sweet. Great Driving in the corner that you spun basically you were taken it at the same speed that in the previous laps about 70 mph. But you car acceleration is fantastic no doubt that in the back straight if you keep the pedal down it shoud climb to the low 160 mphs.

looks like you added z07 clear wickerbill did you notice any difference since 1st trip?

glad everything went well, what did you find to be ideal pressure on the super sports?

now if only could replace the damn PDR optics with the gopro one to get the clear crisp tones rather then tinted overlay

Great catch. I just went back and noticed that. I did indeed accidentally bump the PTM mode button around 1:42 and didn't realize it until 6:47.
That button is in a bad place my forearm hits it repeatedly.

thanks that even shows how i was keeping up with him even in the wrong to mode.

Yes the scraggly car symbol is the traction control coming on. You dont notice it much. It does pull some power however.
