Default Timing, and engine temps

I see posts where the normal operating temp of the car is in the 200-220 range, and i see other posts where someone states teh computer starts pulling timing at 194F.

Which is it?

It would seem normal timing would be in effect at "normal" operating temps, not having timing being pulled below the normal ops temp.

or has someone custom programmed their ECU for temps and timing?

Pulling timing at 194..? That is ludicrous. My car is never below 194 once warmed up in normal street driving this summer.

This cannot be correct? Makes no sense. Please tell us where you got this info. My DD temps never go below 195. ??

This is correct, just checked the ECT cal myself.
-1 @ 194
-3 @ 212
-5 @ 230
-6 @ 248

Guess I'll be putting a 170 or 180 thermostat in mine.

IAT starts pulling at 132 and as much as -10 at 198.
I will say that I've never seen my IAT over 140 though.

That is correct. Now do you understand why we preach putting in a lower temp thermostat and other cooling mods?

194*. But remember it only pulls 3* of timing until 230* ECT and then 5* of timing are pulled and up from there. And of course remember these engines are not tuned for maximum performance under all conditions - there are durability, emissions and other considerations.

This is nothing new. They could have started pulling timing higher and just put less in the base baps. Either way the end result is the same.

This is the Key. You cant just look at the 1 table (timing vs temp) and conclude that total timing actually was reduced.

The other thing to keep in mind is the LT engines don't need much timing to begin with. The adder tables are overly aggressive (set high) and timing subtracted down closer to the norm when the extra timing cant be used due to heat and load.

Point is most would be surprised where the total timing on these engines run. Its no where near where our past experiences tells us it should be.
