Default Lexan window installed

Installed our poly carbonate windshield today. Lots of things learned but overall we are pleased with the results. A definite must I feel if you track the car often. Things we noticed, the mirror and camera assembly are integrated to the molding not stuck on the windshield like most cars. It then actually clips in to the windshield. Since no clips are on the poly windshield, we just used double sided tape. Other thing is because it had some anti scratch on the poly windshield, we had to use silicone rather than urethane so it would bond. Also, we didn't have time, but the black siding that you see on all windshields (that's baked into the glass) will go on as well. We are going to use vinyl so you won't see the silicone and camera housing to make it a more OEM look and a cleaner look as well.

Pros: safer for track application cars and it is 13.6 pounds lighter. 19.4 vs 33.

Cons:
Haven't verified but I think you will lose the heads up display. I just hope the camera still works. Also, I'm not sure but you might not pass inspection but I don't think they can notice unless they press on the windshield.

Finally, does any one know what this sensor is on the pic below?

Also, its a pain in the rear but if your careful and take your time, the side molding/trim can be reused. Some of the Ford cars have these also and are generally not reusable after

you take them off

Could you please inform us of the not so obvious benefits of the lexan windshield, besides weight savings, and it being shatterproof?

Thanks.

Sounds like your defintion of frequent track use is different than most.

Say......you would probably know about clear plex for windshields......advice on that?
Thanks again....

Yeah, I should clarify that my car is a track car only and doesn't see the street. If this is mostly a street car for anyone then I wouldn't recommend this. But if you mostly track the car and can live with a plastic windshield then I think it should be considered. My windshield was already shot due to pitting and chips and would have needed to be replaced anyways so I dedided we should go this route for safety reasons. Weight savings is always a plus even though it's only 13 pounds but it's up front and high.

Not sure what clear plex is for windshields. Are they similar to tear offs? We are adding tear offs to the poly window also.

Just Curious, How will the polycarbonate hold up at track speeds? Have you done this in the past or is this your first time trying it?

Well, pretty much every racecar application uses this type of shield. It's my first time but I don't suspect any issues. We might put a brace down the center for added support but it's a 1/4 inch thick . I go to the track in 2 weeks and will report back

Did you purchase the windshield pre molded or did you fabricate it yourself?

Pre-cut. And we were a little worried but it was a perfect drop in fit. Got it from raceshields

Ok thank you. Let's hope it still works. I was told it was a rain sensor but questioned that as we don't have automatic wipers

I suspect you will end up adding the center support. I had a 1/4" polycarbonate windshield in my C6 Z06 and it started to cave in and vibrate at 140mph.

I remember that your C6Z had experimental polycarbonate side windows at the time.
Did these ever reach production status? And have you ever experienced any issues, e.g. that they "sucked out" (sorry, as a non-native English speaker I don't know a better way to express this) at high speeds?

I had a Lexan windshield in my 911 Porsche race car. We run a lot of races in the rain. You can't use a windshield wiper on Lexan as it ruins it short order. Took the Lexan out and went back to glass. RainX DID NOT provide adequate visibility.

Here's what it looks like on just a wet track at Road Atlanta. Note it was not raining, just wet. If the rain is actually falling it makes it very interesting. I was having car problems so I qualified poorly and had to start from near the back. Working through traffic was not fun. Too dangerous... If you're a fair weather racer and don't run in the rain it's not an issue. Not an option for me as we're racing for championship points.

I never put them into production because of tracking issues. About 1 in 10 times during indexing after door closing they would not seat in the upper weatherstrip track. They took a lot of hand fitting, chamfering the upper edge to get that down to 1 in 10. I never had any high speed issues.

Did you still have a dash when installing the center support. If so, may I ask how you did it?

Our technician fabrication an ingenious little bracket that bolted to the top of the windshield frame and dropped down to hold the rear view mirror. Then he made a removable center support with a foot with rubber pad that rested on the top of the dash. The center support was removable in case I ever got hassled by police for an obstructed windshield.
