After reading all of the posts about adding a mirror tap for a radar detector, I finally attempted mine today on my 2016 z06. Sat backwards in the passenger seat with mirror tilted toward me. Pulled the rear cover halfway off and used a small screwdriver to release the driver side. Located the purple and black wires coming from the roof using a flashlight to identify the colors (highly recommended). I was lucky and didn't need to use a jewlers screwdriver (which I had on hand) to push in mirror tap red and black wires along side purple and black car wire. But I did push straight in using force slowely. I found that I didn't need to disconnect the connector as some did. I used my thumbnail to seperate other connector wires away from the two wires that I was working on. I found that a very hard straight slow push was the best way to add the tap. It will go in all the way. After adding the wires, I used a small round rat tail file to make a half round opening on the edge of the cover on the passenger side to make an exit for the mirror tap wires. Put cover back on. 15 to 20 minute install. Piece of cake
Now, deciding on which escort radar to use
What are you guys using ?

Was contemplating mirror tap but it's more permanent than I'd like it to be. To answer your question, I'm using an Escort Redline. Did a great job keeping me ticketless on the drive to and from SEMA this week.
I didn't see it explicitly stated, but when I went through all these wires with my Power Probe 3 I found the +12V to be always hot.
Is the ground switched? I didn't check, but after giving up on finding switched power, I figure it has to be if you made it work...
The power is switched on when the car is started and switched off when car is shut off. You must use the solid purple wire (hot) lead and black lead coming from the headliner (which goes back to fuse block) . Don't get confused with dark gray wire or purple striped wire. Use solid purple and black wire. Use a bright light to identify them. Detector works perfectly when using correct wires. Mine is a 2016 z.

I'm not doubting it works, but I think it works for a reason you're not aware of perhaps. The power is NOT "switched on when the car is started", it's always there.
The ground is switched, I believe. Yes, if you use exactly those two wires and I'm correct about the ground, it will work exactly as you describe. But if you used the car's common ground, I think you'd find the detector always on.
At least I found +12V hot on that power lead at ALL times.
