Default Old motor oil OK to use?

Just passed 500 miles, so I'll be doing the oil change next week. I have 2 quarts of Mobil 1, unopened, bought 3 years ago.
Thanks,

I dont think it "goes bad" like bread would.

Three years ago I had a great deal, and bought enough Mobil 1 10W30 for few years to come. I bought all the 10W30 within that store.

It's free at the dealership so why not let them do it.

I don't know how competent and careful the mechanic at the local dealer is, besides, I like working on my car.

I took my brand new black Silverado LTZ to the dealer for my FREE oil change……… Dented my tailgate and dinged my door. Wanted to do paint work on my 6 week old truck….which I keep like my vette. Told them I traded in a car not to have paint work!!! Needless to say I demanded a new GM tailgate off of a new truck and the ding Dr did a nice job.
Never again!!!!!! GM dealers treat all cars like they are a Sonic or Spark!! Now that GM is charging me 72k for a Denali and 100K for a Zo6 they better step their service game!!

Free oil change cost me ALOT of time and aggravation. Walmart for my oil, Napa gold filter, and 20 minutes to change my oil makes me very happy its done right.

Blackstone Labs did some oil test on some historic oil they had found at flee markets or some similar places, in original unopened cans. 50-60 year old oil tested as good as the original specs, so three years should be OK to use.

Bill, you must have great results from your dealers.

I'd say I am about 50% OK with my local dealer and it's only that high because I bring in TIL's that I find on the C6 Z06 forum that directs the dealer how to fix my issues.

Replaced cat (and broke/replaced exhaust manifold) for CEL under warranty. Second CEL I gave them the TIL that instructed dealers not to replace cat for the code, just reflash ECM with latest update (this did fix the issue) under warranty. Gave them the Phadt alignment specs, they did the job and a month later during my pre-event check I found the RR toe link jam nut backed off 6 threads (never tightened after alignment). Headlight wiring harness repaired under recall - seems OK so far.

Next nearest dealer about 70-100 miles away, no expectation they'd be any better.

"I bought all the 10W30 within that store."

Looks like the 10w30 came in 5w30 boxes.

I saw that article!! Very informative. Oil doesn't go bad if unopened was proved without a doubt.

It's a fair question - oil doesn't go bad, but other stuff can happen. Hydraulic oils like brake fluid are often hydroscopic, meaning they absorb water out of the atmosphere once opened. And in that sense they "go bad".

To my knowledge motor oil doesn't do it, but so long as its still in the sealed container, should be perfect.

See the E-bay of oils Part 1, 2, 3 in the newsletter section:

Here is the link to Part 1:

These newsletters are interesting even if you don't use Blackstone-labs

It'd highly recommended to not go beyond the 500 miles with theach initial oil change. The dealer called me and told me to bring it in at 480 miles. The Z06s are known (at least the earlier ones) to have too much metal shavings in the oil due to engine breakin. Has caused engine failure.

Whether paid for by GM or not, I would have the dealer do the oil changes, especially on, so they can't blame the owner for something going wrong, and use the fact that maintenance work wasn't done by dealer.
