Can codes be read from the DIC on our cars? If so, can anyone tell me how?
No sir they can not.
ONSTAR can read them but they normally wont give you the code itself.
Depends on how good you are at sweet talking whoever you get on the line as to weather they give you the actual code.
There are all sorts of inexpensive code readers on the market today.
Even some that work off of smart phone apps. They are good to have for times when you just want to know why/what set the code.
Harbor Freight has one on sale for 40 bucks with the coupon. It aint the greatest but it works and updates are free.

C5 was the last generation to have this option, and it is truly missed.
Can't short two pins and get codes on the dash? I haven't tried it since a C4 but surprised they'd take it away. I guess code readers are so cheap all techs have one by now...

shorting the pins on the ALDL ended in 1996 when OBD II
became mandatory.
