Default ZL1 Addons Tow Hooks

So I bought a set of the chrom-moly 'premium' tow hooks from ZL1 Addons. Nice product and easy to screw in. Does anyone know how these hold up to the elements? Are they going to rust out?

Wondering if I can leave them on or need to install them for events only.

They'll probably stand up to the weather just fine. I have the ZL1 Add Ons front and rear ones for the track.

I remove mine between track events. Somebody would probably remove them for me in a parking lot if I left them in for daily driving.

Take a look at this thread in the C7 General section to see what people think of leaving them in:

Didn't consider the souvenir issue. Guess they're coming out.

Do people keep tow hooks for the chance they are disabled on the road or only when required by a track? I won't be tracking my car. Should I have one long tow hook for the chance I need to get pulled onto a flatbed? I would want to keep it in the passenger compartment for I don't like the looks.

I have a 2" wood dowel to tighten the tow hook. Works well and doesn't scratch the finish. I leave 'em in when I feel like it.

I leave mine in. My front unit I put in with blue loctite. So unless they have a large breaker bar with them it isn't coming out.

Does anyone one know what red color is the closest match for touch up on the red? I use they to pull my car into the trailer. First time I didn't protect it and got a few bite marks.

Now i I have a piece of leather I put between the loop and the hook.

yes. You should have one. There are different threads used by GM on the cars. Caddy uses a smaller diameter if I recall correctly.

So if you ever need a flat bed you had better have your own that you know will fit and work.

Looking for a clarification-----many months back on another thread about these two hooks one guy (that seemed very knowledgeable based on prior posts) commented that these tow hooks are great for the track, but not the roadways. He said something about the tow trucks could use the hook to get us out of a ditch or an embankment, etc., but would not be able to use them to get the corvettes onto the flatbed truck.

Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks.

I recall that thread but haven't found it. IIRC the problem was the winch is centered on the flatbed while the tow hook is not
therefore difficult to keep the car properly centered on the truck.

I have the ZL1 tow hooks- front and rear. The Z06 has been pulled onto a flat bed tow truck 3 times using the front hook with no problems. I would think there would be considerably more effort in using the hooks to pull the vehicle out of a ditch than it would be to roll it up the incline bed.

time2run,

I 'think' it was a matter of being able to pull the car straight enough to get to go on, and stay on, the ramp, etc. Versus, when pulling me out of an embankment or something, they don't have to worry too much about being straight----- they just have to get me back up the street.

But you say they worked for you 3 times (I won't ask how why you needed a tow 3 times, but it sure sounds like you are enjoying the heck out of the car----good for you!).

Would you mind sharing the part numbers you ordered? And, did you. get the 'angled' front hook that is less likely to rub the paint?

Thanks

The winch on my trailer is centered. I've probably winched my Z on that trailer 200 times. It doesn't pull to the side but you do have to watch how the cable is feeding on the spool as it will tend to just coil on the right side as you get the car closer to the winch.

There is a place for the hook in the trunk under the carpet.

I have one there just in case.

I use the tow hook to winch my car onto my trailer. What I have found is as the car comes up on the trailer the winch in the center of the trailer tends to pull the car to the left and since the winch is mounted to the trailer bed t definitely pulls the nose of the car down. The other thing I found out is the tow hook turns in the mount as the car comes up on the trailer. Due to the turning and overall up and down movement of the tow hook in its receiver the part of the grille that touches the tow hook is broken.

Bill
