Default M7 trans temps

What M7 transmission temps do you guys see during sustained highway driving around 70-80mph in 80F ambients? I could have sworn mine were alway in the 140s or lower but today I was solidly in the 160s-low 170s.

I'm always suspicious of pump failures, but have no idea how I can check if the trans fluid pump is working or dead.

I haven't even ever paid attention to highway driving trans temps.

But I sure wouldn't worry about what you're experiencing - even in the 170s.

I have no idea what the max trans temp is before you'd get some kind of trans overheat alert, but the Owner's Manual says there's a message "Transmission Hot - Idle Engine" if the fluid gets too hot - I guess that's for both the M7 and A8.

I have an M7, and you can see some temps in the screen shots below of 30 minute sessions at Daytona, and I never got any kind of high trans temp indication.

You can see the date/time at the top of the pictures.

The first one was a hot day - ambient temp was around low to mid 90s. It was after lunch, so had been cooling off from the morning sessions for about 1-1/2 hours, and the min trans temp was in lap 1 and was 171°.

The second picture was on a cool day - first lap of the day and temp around 70°.

Bottom line - even with trans temps in the 170s you've got a loooooong way to go before you're overheating the trans fluid!!

Anybody know what the max trans fluid temp should be?

BTW - I suspect your trans fluid pump is working just fine, but I sure don't know of any way to determine that.

Thanks. Those Daytona speeds really get the temps up!

The only thing that got me more concerned about temps was a plastic like burning smell coming from the trans cooler area after drives. Seems to have subsided now but the only things in there are the cooler and the pump. My max trans temp at Sebring last week was 225F so things are still within the operating range. Just seemed like a 20-30F climb from where I recall it was.

I posted about this before but there is an issue with the sealer used in the trans causing the fluid to lose its anti-foaming ability. When that happens you basically get foam in the lines to the cooler and it doesn't work well. The solution is multiple flushes of the system.

That said, I was seeing 100F on track above what you are reporting (high 280's) and the trans was puking fluid out of the vent.

I remember your post now. Didn't you say they changed the sealer later in 2015?
