Default DSC firmware update

anyone else get the firmware update email surrounding velocity tuning?

Is this update needed if you are NOT planning on tuning your self ?

I got the email and did the update. It's pretty simple to do. Be sure to watch the video. Took maybe 5 or 10 minutes max. I had a custom file so I downloaded it from the DSC box, saved it, did the firmware update, and then reloaded the ptds file.

thank you. Were you able to do it via WIFI or did you need to run the USB?

I ran the usb cable when I installed it so I used that. I wouldn't consider a firmware update over wifi but it may work.

thanks again. I didn't run the USB so was hoping WIFi (or me not needing to do it at all) worked. Guess I need to stop being lazy and take the wheel well off and do it .

Probably a good idea. I ran mine up and behind the rubber moldings under the hood and at the bottom of the A-pillar. There was a hole that went behind the dash so I just pushed it through that and have it tucked under the dash on the far right hand side. It was fairly easy to do.

Curious what this update really does. The video is just of Mike showing how you can record and log velocity parameters.

Exactly. I thought it could do that before. Does this update imply the velocity function didn't work before or just it wouldn't record?

I got an early release and have tested it. The controller now utilizes velocity tuning of the shocks. Believe it or not it takes performance to yet another level. Immediately noticeable. It makes the car "tighter" and more responsive while increasing stability, compliance and comfort. Sounds crazy as these different parameters are at variance with one another. However, it is what it is.

Velocity tuning allows shock adjustment based on the velocity of the piston rod movement, more accurately tuning the chassis to road surface changes. This feature provides a new dimension of tuning that maximizes both performance and comfort.

The update has nothing to do with custom tuning. You'd be absolutely foolish not to install it as it takes the system to a whole new level. Another nice thing, DSC doesn't charge for the upgrades even though they've spent many, many dollars/hours developing. Velocity tuning is once again game changing from a performance and comfort perspective.

Very, very impressive.

Rick

So in other words it didn't work before this update?

I have made pretty major changes to rebound settings with no discernible difference so I would say, No it didn't work before this update.

Months ago the whole fanfare was about zero'ing travel so the velocity tuning would work. So it didn't work then, but now it does?

My understanding is zeroing the travel had nothing to do with velocity tuning of the shocks. Zeroing the travel was just to tell the controller the relative position of the shocks in a static state with drivers weight accounted for. Same as corner balancing only different ;-)

My further understanding is that velocity was previously measurable but the technology using it to function with other operating metrics presented very significant technical difficulties.

Mike was able to breach that barrier and get velocity to now be used as an operational metric.

I surely could be wrong on the above two points and hope someone more knowledgeable will correct me as appropriate. Mike said he'd chime in when he has a moment.

FYI, this is a good thing, a very good thing.....

Well I'm glad if its working now. But I was definitely told zero'ing the travel is what made the velocity tables active.

They probably changed the way the interface worked with the shocks. I know I was told it used velocity information from the sensors.

I was up there today and Mike was *very* excited about this. What I gather from him was that it was a big performance improvement in the way the controller responded to the velocity inputs.

Here is a quote from Mike's post from 12/16/16:

"to take advantage of the velocity its important to zero the calibration go to setting look on the lower right for the box zero travel. with the car on a level surface or setup table with driver select zero travel then follow the dialog for two clicks now the ride hts are custom set to your car." One would thus infer that it was working back then.

The dates on the firmware files are confusing. I received the email describing "major improvements.....for all C7, Camaro, and Mustang GT350 vehicles." However, the date shown for my Mustang firmware is 2-17-17 and Corvette is 1-11-17. Camaro, on the other hand, is 8-17-17.
