Considering changing the trans and diff to Mobil1 at 500 miles. Do I need to add friction modifier to the Mobil1 75w90 for the rear diff? I know the GM stuff comes with it.
Its spec sheet has this as a feature: "Enhanced frictional properties"
Also nowhere does it say it is a Non Slip product. In Redline the 75-90 has friction modifier and the 75-90NS does not. Easy solution. Use it. Put the car back down and lightly turn in a circle. If it gives you a "gronch" sound it doesn't. Then put it back up and add a little friction modifier.
Also a google search for Mobil 1 75-90 gear lube friction modifier shows no results so it is not available separately. Other google searches show Jeep folks using it without modifier without a problem.
I had a tech rep from Standard Gears, who make their living rebuilding transmissions and differentials, tell me that you should never use anything but the factory prescribed lube in the GM differentials. This was after another one of their sales reps convinced me to use something else in one of their very expensive special remanufactured differentials and it was toast in less than 700 miles.
