Default First Time On Track With Z06...Daytona...Great time!

Bought this car to do some track days with...I have had it for a couple of months...1100 miles on it now. While I have some time on the track (Chump Car, Nurburgring, and years of motorcycle racing), I have not done an "official" track day. What an awesome time...The car is just AMAZING.

The day did not start well as my 2017 Z06 / Z07 M7 threw the P0106 code right off the bat...We were lucky that the local Chevy dealer (Hall) took it in immediately and re-programmed it. I lost maybe 30 minutes of driving time...But PDG was awesome and let me jump into another group for the make up time. After reading some of the threads, I was also worried it might be the BMS filter I installed so I returned it to stock when I got back to the track. From then on it was perfect. Did not skip a beat.

What an awesome day...Cannot wait until Ron Fellows in December...Hope to learn a lot and see how I do at the next event!!

Did I mention how awesome the car was?!?!?

Here are a few pics and vids...Oh...PDG allowing us to take passengers was awesome!! Took some friends, grandfather, wife, etc.

Hey Mark - great pics and video!! It was great to meet you at the track.

I'm glad you got that P0106 code fixed.

I've got a bunch of track time in my 2016 with absolutely no problems - at least until my last session today!!! I also got a P0106 code and the limp mode for the first time.

Hope to see you at more events here at Daytona.

You say you're going to Spring Mt in Dec??

There are 2 HPDE track events in Dec - 1-3 Dec, and 8-10 Dec. Will you make one of them??

Awesome videos!! But doesn't the manual say "Do not track until after 1,500 miles" or it doesn't really matter?!

Thanks so much for your help with the scan tool!!! If you were not there my day would not have gone as it did...Sorry to hear you had the same issue! Strange...

I will be at Spring Mountain the 3rd and 4th...Not sure if I will be able to do another one right after...But maybe I can squeeze the 8-10 in!! Are you going to do that one?

I will keep you posted.

Maybe according to the manual...But my local corvette tech told me to "thrash it" after the 500 mile service! I was easy on it until the 1100 miles / track day...

After the P0106 code was resolved it did not skip a beat. Has not used a drop of oil, etc. HAPPY WITH IT!!!!

Thanks! I was certainly trying to keep plenty in reserve and not do anything dumb...It is not a race. But I would like to find a few more seconds...And try to match the pace I did on 2 wheels 20 years ago!! LOL! I KNOW the car has SO MUCH more in it.

There was another guy...Not sure he is on here. Butch Mock...Black Z06. Does track days...He was QUICK (had a good second+ on me per lap)! His 2015 was a bit faster than mine on the banking...Maybe I need a few more miles on mine...His had an intake and that was it.

What a great track to generate some speed on with those long straights. Had to be a thrill to be on such a legendary track with your Z. Thanks for sharing the videos

Glad I could help!

Did the tech at the Jon Hall dealership flash in that TSB for the 2017 Z06?? I guess so, if you didn't have any problem after your visit with them.

Have fun at Spring Mt. I'll be instructing at both Daytona events on Dec 1-3 and Dec 8-10, so hope to see you in a couple months.

Anybody else interested in attending one of those events at Daytona, here's some info.
  • There's an open track event "under the lights" for the night of Oct 26th. Check out www.davidmurry.com for registering. On that site you can see that driving one of their events "affords highly experienced drivers the opportunity to drive and practice their skills without having to share the race track with unaware or inexperienced drivers", so advanced solo drivers only:
  • There's a HPDE Oct 27-29 put on by PCA. It's only for advanced solo drivers (approved by the PCA), and the DE sessions are in between wheel-to-wheel race sessions, and my experience at this event in years past is that the DE sessions often lose time because they are cleaning up the track and towing vehicles off the track after a race session. However it's a very inexpensive event for Daytona!!:

Info for the other track events at Daytona in December can be found here - AND BOTH OF THE DECEMBER EVENTS ARE NOVICE FRIENDLY!! Even if you are a beginning track driver you will get instruction at either of the Dec events so you can be comfortable running the track and learn about driving your Vette at a track event:

https://www.motorsportreg.com/calend...t+Orange%2C+FL

  • You can see that there are two co-organizers for the Dec 1-3 event. One is an Audi club from Ohio, and the other is Performance Driving Experience (different organization from Henry Gilbert's Performance Driving Group that held the event this past weekend). You can sign up with either group, but here's a link to additional info on the Audi club site:

  • The Dec 8-10 event is put on by MVP Track Time and is a little less expensive than most other Daytona events. This should be a really good track event, and more info can be found on the MVP TT site:

You can sign up for 1, 2, or all 3 days of these Fri-Sat-Sun events. You'll generally get at least about 2 hours of track time per day.

Hope to c'ya at the track!!

.

Thanks for the info...I will try to make one of those! Need to go faster! LOL! I am SO much slower on the banking (172 or so)...Had to be the stage 3...My infield speeds were right there with yours. My drive out of the bus stop was good too...Car was spinning a bit as I was on the gas HARD coming out (so not a bad drive going out). I could only muster high 2:03's. But then again 10+ MPH down on both sides of the oval might be some of it!

I will have to remove wings, etc. and try again!

Yes - I just posted the info below in another post:
________________________________________ _______________
I've run several events at Daytona, and until the event last weekend they all were with Stage 1-1/2 aero on my Z06/Z07 - that's Stage 2 front splitter end plates and Stage 1 wings/extensions on the rear spoiler.

Last weekend I ran the full Stage 3. My lap times were about 5 seconds slower, and my top speed was only about 174 mph vs 185 with Stage 1-1/2. So I think the full Stage 3 creates a lot of extra drag for high speed events.

Coming out of the Bus Stop (the chicane on the back straight) and accelerating around the banking on NASCAR T3/4 at WOT, I timed a number of laps from 100-170 mph. In April with Stage 1-1/2 aero it was taking 17-18 seconds. Last weekend with full Stage 3 it was taking 22-23 seconds. The temp might have been a few degrees warmer last weekend than in April, and at the end of the event last weekend I did get the limp mode, but the car felt normal and strong up until that limp mode at the very end of the event.

So, at Daytona on laps of about 2 minutes, I'm faster than 140 mph for around 33-34 seconds, so the Stage 3 aero probably affects the speed and lap times much more than most other tracks.
________________________________________ _________________

I think you'll definitely do faster laps and faster top speed if you can reduce the aero drag.

Great to know!!! Have to do that next time...And happy to see our cars were similar on top end (you 174 me 173).

Butch Mock's car was MUCH faster than mine...He was leaving me on the banking. And I think he was stage 3?? He said he only has a cold air intake.

I'm wondering how does the car go into limp mode when doing 170MPH+ and the air is being forced in to cool things. Seems strange it would overheat!?

When I got the "reduced power" message...It was not overheating. Temp was 220 or so. It was due to P0106...Something different. Local Chevy dealer fixed quickly and I was back out! Then perfect from there.

At about 150 mph...The car suddenly lost a massive amount of power. Sounded like it was on 4 cylinders. I pulled to the bottom of the track and brought it in. Was not scary...
