A little disappointed
So, we brought both cars to a show that raised money for a warrior wounded in combat. Great show, raised a ton of cash for a deserving individual and his family.
On a whim, we entered the exhaust note contest just to combat the Ferrari's and Lambo's with their exotic sound. Now, I've heard both the ZR and Z's exhaust at WOT on the highway, and I figured that they are pretty similar in sound, so I let my GF take the Z center stage to show what a V8 sounds like...and it fell on its face.
It would only rev briefly and loudly and then pull back with no throttle response. I'm guessing it's because it's an A8, but I had no idea that this would happen, or I would have sent the ZR up there.
Is this a well known thing that you can't rev the auto trans at will while stopped?

I think so. It seems to have a low rev limit in neutral, perhaps to prevent transmission damage from revving it high in neutral and slamming it into drive. I haven't tried to figure out if there's a way to get around it.... maybe someone else knows.

Don’t know what year your Z is but my ‘15 and my close friend’s ‘15 (both A8s) will freely rev nicely in neutral. We frequently “show off” our exhaust notes at our local Cars & Coffee and when “cruising” especially in tunnels and underpasses. Since I installed the Tony Mamo ported throttle body mine does so with a quicker “bark”. Our “revs” are more like “blips” of the throttle vs. a held open WOT however. Love the “bark”!

Very nice show. You must have the red ZO6. I have revved my 16Z in parades with no problem.

By any chance this wasn't launch control or mode kicking in? I think it will limit it to like 1800rpm's. Just a thought....

What I have noticed with my 2016 Z06 A8 is that it appears to limit to 4000rpm when in park or neutral. Can anyone confirm the 4000rpm limit?

We just picked up our Z this weekend so still too new to try it but I did try to rev it and show off in our Z51 A8 once and the rev limiter cut the fun short on it as well.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. It's a '16 and as stated, it did appear to rev limit to 4k in both neutral and park. Oh well, next time will use the manual trans!
