Unrelated - the car can be driven in full auto or with manual paddles in any mode at any time (just pull a paddle to start), even in D.
If you pull a paddle while in D you'll go into "paddle shift mode" which will time out after a little bit and go back to normal D if you stop manually shifting. It's all pretty well thought out.
