Default Headers question

I have heard both sides to this. I'm looking to do a few simple bolt on mods (pulley, intake, tune) and I hear some tuners saying you need headers because the extra boost will melt the cats, and then I also hear some say you don't need headers. What's the consensus on bolt on mods without headers?

Thanks for the replies, but I'm looking for answers to my specific question...about running stock manifolds with bolt ons. Thanks

I'm saying that when you do other bolt on mods that increase boost (let's say 18% lower) do you need to do the headers at the same time because I've been hearing people say the increase boost/temps can and will create problem by leaving the factory catalytic converters on there.

Yes you need headers. Temps will rise and things will melt

Looking at the fast list, it seems that almost none of them are running headers, or at least they didn't specify that they were.

I’ve also heard doing headers reduces boost. For example 14 lbs of boost will be 12 after headers.

Yes, you will need to remove cats. Most tuners that I have talked too all recommend some type of cat removal for increased boost to be on the safe side. I also know of a melted cat situation on a LSA that not only took out the motor but the supercharger also, cats melted and everything was lost. That was with running a lower and upper along with extra cooling and meth, not on the street but on a track in Texas. 85% of mileage (9500) with this car was on a track.

yes, its possible to loose a little boost after a long tube setup but that doesn't mean that you are losing power. the car will make the power, but with less boost. less boost means less heat generated from the blower....

In simple terms an engine is an air pump. It uses air to move the pistons so more air in and more air out means more power. By reducing the restriction to flow coming out of the engine means less boost but possibly more power. As you go down this modification path you will find the next area of restriction whether it be intake (CAI, pulley, SC), internals (cam, lifters, etc) or outflow (headers/ x-pipe).

an alternative to headers are the main cat delete pipes from Norcal. Less expensive, easier to install.
