E30 vs E50?
Hey guys, looks like I'm going to pull the trigger on a DSX flex sensor and custom tune in two weeks. I will have my tuner set me up to run a max of E50, since I am not changing anything else. I have a 2.3 upper pulley, Halltech CAI, Katech ported TB and a Borla x-pipe. I just learned that a station near my house now sells E30 right from the pump. I am wondering if I should even mess with trying to mix fuels to get near E50, or just run the E30 that is already mixed? Any thoughts. Thanks!

Unless you are mixing the fuel at home, in a jug you can test, doing the guessing game at the pump is a gamble as pump ethanol can vary, although I see people do it all the time. That being said, you can monitor the E content if you have some sort of in-car scanner (HP Tuners or other OBD2 monitor). I have noticed that mine takes a bit before it levels out so I again would not be at the pump trying to get close to your threshold.

I run E30 most of the time but have a better low side fuel pump and meth so I can run full E85 if needed. A few of our stations have ethanol only pumps with E15, E30 and E85 already mixed. I have tried the guessing game but your total octane content will also vary what fuel you are blending, 91 or 93 as a base. Tune for as much as your car will allow and let the sensor do the rest. Make life easy.

Thanks guys. I have an ethanol tester and will mix at stations that I know the ethanol content. I may get a OBD-II reader at some point as well so I know exactly what is in the tank. I guess my bigger question is there a huge difference between running E30 and E50?

I doubt you will see "seat of the pants" differences between the two on the street or even the track with your mods. If you want pure dyno numbers you will have a little better with E85 obviously but that is it. Here is a little chart for FYI comparisons

Check this calculator out.
I have it bookmarked on my phone. I never put in the octane rating to see what it ends up as, but rather just to see what I should mix for E40. The hard part is remember how many gal you can fit depending on the gauge.

Guys, I just found this article on E30 and ethanol (octane rating), in general. Very interesting.
