Default Rims pitting-what to do next?

2016 that was purchased new April of 2017-have the chrome/$1995.00 wheels w/5400 miles on it-original owner no track use. been back to the dealer twice once when written up and told they will call me hmmm three weeks goes by and I call service manager and then was told I need to bring the car back for detailed pictures to be sent to GM-done that and have called service manager daily after a week of waiting-now being told that GM has to authorize before dealer ordering wheels. Now to my question what do I do next wait or call and then who? Car looks like crap w/pitted chrome rims

Very frustrated

how bad are they pitted. Post a photo of the worst spot if you can.

If you have the original equipment pads that might be causing the pitting as I think the dust from those is corrosive.

I ordered chrome rims on my 07 vert which I kept for 53k miles and 11 years. Never again will I order Chrome. Brake dust on chrome if you don't wash often enough is a PITA. I found that I had to use chrome polish on the wheels twice a year to get them to clean up near new again.

PS - I have had no issues whatsoever with the gray painted wheels on my various Z cars.

As a customer who spent a lot on there car I could really care less if the brake pads are causing the corrosive material to cause the pitting. will post pics of the worst wheel later as i put the cover on it-cant really see the wheels with that on.

For a high quality low dust aftermarket pad I recommend the Carbotech 1521 pad 100% made in the USA. A low dust pad that is rotor friendly and performs like OEM and last longer. 100% non-corrosive dust will not harm your paint or wheels. This pad also contains NRS technology. Carbotech uses NRS technology on all C4, C5, C6 & C7 front and rear brake pads. Here is a link to explain further what NRS technology is exactly: https://www.nrsbrakes.com/about/If interested I will be happy to help you out or you can order online here http://ampdautosport.com/brake-pads/corvette/ or call me direct at 216-780-8825. Use promo code z28 at check out.

Carbotech™ Bobcat 1521™ The Carbotech Bobcat 1521™ is our high performance street compound that is our most successful compound. The Bobcat compound is known for its awesome release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. Like our AX™ & XP™ line of compounds, Bobcat 1521™ is a Ceramic based friction material offering minimal rotor damage and non-corrosive dust. Bobcat 1521™ offers outstanding performance, even when cold, low dusting and low noise with an excellent initial bite. This compound’s virtually perfect linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Bobcat 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 900°F. Bobcat 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle, police cruiser. The Bobcat 1521™ compound has been found to last two-three times longer than OE pads you can purchase at a dealership or national retailer. That’s one of the beauties of Carbotech Ceramic brake compounds. Bobcat 1521™ is NOT recommended for any track use.

I would get in contact with GM and explain the situation to them for hopefully some action.

I get your point: you paid a lot, you don't want wheels to pit from anything including brake pads. And no special cleaning should be needed. Period.

But on the other side, there's GM. They built a car that, on the street can go 0-60 in LESS than 3 seconds---and it has to stop.
Consistently AND repeatedly, if needed. On the streets. Not too many cars that have that type of quickness---and those that are, have similar excellent brake pads that aren't found on a Malibu.

Gold72 is right tho in that many types of finishes incl. chrome and some paints are negatively affected by corrosive pad residue.

Find the pads you like for the street and read the limitations of those pads, many of which can't be used in a racing-type situation. Or, if you don't want to pay for that, you can expect to have crappy looking wheels that are not the responsibility of the car mfr. or the wheel mfr.---they want you to GO, and STOP.

well got a answer back from the dealer and they said because of the brake pads being so corrosive and the car driving in slush/snow they cannot warranty the pitting. Yes I did live in Wisconsin but moved to Florida in June-bought this 2016 new April 27th 2017 and the car now has 5100 miles on it. Spent last winter/this spring living in Myrtle beach and left the car in a garage all winter long and had it sent to Florida in a enclosed transport. Can you imagine trying to drive this in slush/snow-the extra cost on these wheels were $1995.00 GM is doing there best to not pay out there problem. Have never used any thing on these wheels except car soap and water. Have been a very loyal customer which have used other brands a long the way but always seem to have a hard time with warranty work w/gm. Will go the distance with a case filed and any other options I can use but in the end GM more than likely will lose another customer shame on them.

Thanks for all your replies

OP, chrome plating isn't what is used to be. At one time, quality ornamental chrome plating included separate layers of copper, nickel, and chromium, which can have excellent corrosion resistance.

High-quality "triple plating" is getting hard to find any more. Environmental concerns have shut most of these places down.

Yes, but quality triple-plating is also a lot more expensive and time consuming than a flash of chrome alone.

What I would get is a clear powdercoat on a polished wheel, or a chrome-colored powdercoat. Not as bright as real chrome, but a nice compromise between brightness and durability.

GM if putting additional cost of $1995.00 there is a expectation the chrome would last at least till the warr. expires if not it should be covered.

where is fla are ya ? im boca / delray i own a car wash if ya wanna be my friend im a nice boy lol

Also for everyone else looking to avoid pits chips from corrosion either wash your wheels 1/2 p week w out fail or rinse everyday w water or best option would be to apply a coat of wheelwax or any heavy applicated carnuba product , dust will fly off , not stick , wheel will shine better , and make cleaning a snap !

The acid based soap used at some car washes will do that also, and being in Wi myself, one trip down the highway with that corrosive salt brine they use here is all it takes. Lesson learned
