Z06 brake pad replacement
#3
I'll second the PowerStop recommendation. I recently switched from the OEM pads going into a track weekend. I was very pleased with the braking force which allowed me to go deeper into the turn. Also, much less dust. Very little with street driving.

How often are you planing on going to the track? Road course or drag strip?
There is no brake pads that fits all.

What is your thinking on the powerstop ceramic mentioned in this post for just spirited street driving? Are they worth it and are they as effective(or better) than OEM?
Also,....Have you been to Spring Mountain? I'm going in 2 weeks?
Thanks.

The stock pads ar pretty decent pads but dust a lot. The only reason you would have to change them out is to get rid of the dust, which is exactly what I did. I swap to different pads for track days.

Hi DevilDog. From your neighbor in the "southwest (Chicago) burbs." I recently bought a new 2019 ZO6 auto also with the J56 brake package. The dust these generate all over my black wheels is nasty to say the least. I NOT a big brake user either. I much prefer the GO pedal. I think the OEM's are semi-metallic. Is that possible? That's what the dealer parts guy said.

No, I haven't been to Spring Mountain. I have friends who've been there. I'm more of a 1/4 mile guy. Enjoy the new Z and have fun at Spring Mountain.

Carbotech makes several different compounds from street to full race and the great thing about the Carbotech pads is all there compounds are compatible with each other so you can swap pads for street and track with no issues using the same rotors no re-bedding no cleaning of the rotors just swap pads and go.
There low dust street pad is the 1521 compound.
The Carbotech Bobcat 1521™ is our high performance street compound that is our most successful compound. The Bobcat compound is known for its awesome release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. Like our AX™ & XP™ line of compounds, Bobcat 1521™ is a Ceramic based friction material offering minimal rotor damage and non-corrosive dust. Bobcat 1521™ offers outstanding performance, even when cold, low dusting and low noise with an excellent initial bite. This compound’s virtually perfect linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Bobcat 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 900°F. Bobcat 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle, police cruiser. The Bobcat 1521™ compound has been found to last two-three times longer than OE pads you can purchase at a dealership or national retailer. That’s one of the beauties of Carbotech Ceramic brake compounds. Bobcat 1521™ is NOT recommended for any track use.Adam Adelstein

However i I am not sure about the track. Proceed with caution there or flip the factory pads back in for the track. It’s easy to change.

agree powerstop z26 is great for the street and seems to have great initial bite and works well stopping the car with no fade on the street.

You will lose some braking performance if you go with a street ceramic pad. On the street you may never notice even with aggressive driving, but, it can happen if you really push things.
To get lower cost brake parts I swapped out my CCM brake system for the AP Racing brake system with iron rotors. On the street the Ferodo 2500 pads are great but they dust a lot (not the little amount the stock pads dust). I decided to try a set of Carbotech 1521s during the off season so I didn't have to clean the wheels as much. They were OK as I had driven them around town but I had somebody ask me to take them for a ride one night and as we were approaching a blind T intersection with a stop sign at about 115 mph I laid into the brakes and there was little left. Pedal firm but not stowing well. He didn't realize it but it was a little touchy as we approached the T but I got it stopped. You do not push those pads hard. Situation reminded me of what happened the first time I took my 86 with its 12 inch stock brakes to the track. As we approached T1 at the Glen the instructor was in the right seat yelling more brake, more brake, more brake. I was pushing on the brake pedal as hard as I could while pulling up on the steering wheel. All I could say is that's all there is. Talk about Pucker Factor.
