I just got an AFE intake to try on my Z06. I noticed right away they add a what looks like a piece of exhaust pipe cut 3/4 inch long and put it in inside the intake at the TB end for support. It looks like it is fine without it and with it in there it closes the intake opening too small. You can increase the tube end inside diameter by removing it.

The tube does shrink somewhat after the ring is removed. Just don't tighten the clamp too much or it's inside diameter will reduce even more. But good to remove it due to it only being 86 mm ID. Our stock throttle bodies are 87 mm but they do have the butterfly as a restriction reducing the effective diameter.
And easier way to remove it is with a heat gun. Little heat and it slides right out. How I removed mine.
When I bought my AFE that metal insert was made of aluminum which distorted (from time & clamp tightness) so I removed it and replaced it with some stronger and slightly thinner stainless steel tubing. I feel that you will stand a good chance of distorting the plastic tubing "over time" if you remove the metal insert which is there to stop the distorting. As far as performance goes my car runs pretty good with the insert on the stock tune.
