Default Locking lug nuts are useless

I'm an idiot and I lost the keyed socket to my locking lug nuts. Its rare for me to lose stuff but I did somehow.

Today I finally tried to get them off and 3 out of 4 came off with just a normal 6 point 3/4" socket! Lol

Of course, the last one fought me tho. It rounded off the edges and then the socket that I used for the other 3 no longer could grab. I tried bunch of different sockets and impact gun, just kept rounding it further down. Finally then was rounded down enough where I just pounded a 18mm socket on and that ended up working.

So long story short, im probably never going to buy locking lugs again.. it's a false security and didn't even slow me down except for the very last one was unlucky.

I'm sure there are better ones out now than these but to me it's just not worth the hassle

They are a deterrent since most thieves aren’t going to spend the time you did to steal them. It’s a 2 minute job for thieves.

My point was 3 out of 4 came off with a completely normal socket....

thieves wouldn’t want to “hammer on” sockets. Too much noise.

People have been getting locking lugnuts off of cars without a key, well, since the dawn of the locking lugnut lol. This should not come as a surprise. It's just another means of keeping honest people honest.

One out of 4 required hammering on.. the other 3 came off as a normal lug nut with a slightly oversized socket. That's my entire point...

If I was lucky.. the 4th one would have came off just like the other 3

A person who wants to steal wheels on a regular basis will just pay some $$ and purchase a set of sockets that are designed to remove locking lug nuts.

your post is a good post. Wheel locks are just a minor deterrent. not much more than that. The tire stores can get them off very quickly, for people who don’t have the key. The pro thieves probably carry the same ****. They only deter the amateur thug thieves.

Locking lug nuts succeed only in inconveniencing the owner of the car.

One of the first things I did was replace the locking lug nuts. My car is seldom out of my sight and they're a pain in the posterior.

Security measures are always a trade between what is "worth" implementing..

Obviously a locked door is worth it. To me, special keyed lug nuts are not. Especially on a car I mainly drive to/from work and park in a locked garage

Garages come to mind an maybe find a "better area" no one is stealing your wheels around here.

Anything one does to deter any sort of theft, whether from a home or a car, can be beaten. But that doesn't mean that it has no value.

You need gorilla lug nuts. Pretty sure the average joe is not taking them off using whatever tool they have in their garage.

Now actual thieves, they have tools for everything. But it won't be easy. For a thief, it's all about being discreet and getting in and out in the fastest time. These locking nuts (well gorilla lug nuts), will prolong their getaway and a thief might not want to risk getting caught.

Yup, got the five per tire Gorilla locking lug nuts.. won't stop a professional who really wants my rims and tires but it will slow them down. I'm thinking the five per tire would be a very big deterrent to the amateur out running around a neighborhood just being A**holes and messing with cars.
