Hey guys, been a while since I got rid of my C5 and my fiancé and I just got a 2016 with under 8,000 miles.
It is amazing but had a few questions. I searched and see temps on different posts but they all seem to be during hotter months. I have a few miles that I can use and if not satisfied can returned so want to make sure all is good.
We are in Phoenix so it’s hot… Right now we at 65 degrees and we are running it around with coolant temps at 200-220 mixed driving. Obviously I’m working it a little but don’t want to be out of luck when we hit 110+ and it’s overheating. Anything to be worried about?
Make sure your Instrument Panel is showing the Touring Display and see what the digital readouts for both the coolant and oil temperatures are.
Which transmission do you have? An A8 or M7. I have an M7 2015Z and my coolant temp runs between 188-190 when I have the car set in cruise at 80 mph, transmission in 7th gear with an outside ambient temp of 90 degrees. The engine oil temp runs about 2 degrees lower under those same conditions.
After a few laps on the track with lots of wide open throttle operation up to 150+ mph speeds with the same outside ambient temps the coolant temp runs about 220 and the oil temp runs close to 270.
I had my coolant flush done by the dealership and the new thermostats are 194*. Mine began running at the temps you describe. You don't have many miles on it, although on a time basis it is/was ready for a flush. You might check to see if that service was done. I ended up going to a Katech 174*. All good now.
~200-220F coolant is typical/normal for A8 Z06. I would not worry about it. The overheating issue is somewhat exaggerated. The car can overheat (262F coolant temp) when pushed hard on track in warm weather (I have done it). But I cannot see any possible way you could get up to 262F on the street. 262F is the point set by GM as "overheat" and the computer will put car into speed limited limp mode with an error message (you will notice, it is not subtle).
when i first read your post "Hey guys, been a while since I got rid of my C5 and my fiancé and I just got a 2016 with under 8,000 miles." it made me think you ditched your c5 and your fiancé and moved on a c7 Z.
Don’t worry about coolant temp unless you see 240 in these cars. Gone are the days where 200-230 degrees is a bad thing. Engines run more efficient with warmer coolant temps. The car is designed to run between 195 and 220.
now if you’re cruising in 7th gear on the highway and the gauge is still 220+ you probably have a faulty thermostat that’s not opening up all the way.
