Default DOD Delete options

Well worn path, understood. However -

Question after some searching is: I don't wish to drastically change the camshaft (Expectation is that I do need to get a non-DOD unit).
I have the Ls7 lifters and some hopefully correct push rods. Recently researched that I need to get a different cam.
I knew about the plate. Can we confirm the cam is needed?

This is a DD and I would like to conserve my 12-14mpg (e85/91 octane mix in CA), so no big sticks I would say.

If the focus is to get rid of DOD then you need a different cam. You can’t install the ls7 lifters on the stock cam.

I keep on reading that you have to install a new cam for the DOD delete, but I do not find the reasoning behind it.
On the DOD Zylinders, the duration is app. 2 ° longer, so what ?
On the DOD cylinders, the lift is a tiny bit higher, so what ?

I assume the opening and closing ramps are different, but that should be on the "softer" side. So why would a standard lifter not work an a DOD cylinder as well ?
Can someone explain ?

Best regards from Germany

Götz
