In my recently acquired Corvette Black Book they reference Stingray, Stingray Pilot, Z06 and Z06 Pilot also ZR1, ZR1 Pilot. I never heard of a Pilot model of Corvette and a google search didn’t help. Any5body know what they are referring to?
A stretch but maybe the Astronauts/Pilots and their Corvettes??
Astronauts have been associated with Chevrolet Corvettes throughout history. In 1969, Alan Bean, Charles “Pete” Conrad, and Richard Gordon ordered the most famous astronaut Corvettes of all time, painted gold and black to match their lunar module spacecraft, and bedecked with triple-carb 427s. This trio of Corvettes was featured in many press photos and came to define the pilots and their cars. Corvettes have been associated with America’s manned space program from Alan Shepard’s first sub-orbital Mercury flight in the Freedom 7 capsule on May 5, 1961, to the final flight of Apollo 17 landing astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt on the moon on December 11, 1972. Astronauts James Irwin, Alfred Worden, and David Scott also drove matching and patriotic Corvettes. Alan Shepard showed up to space training in 1959 driving his '57 Chevy Corvette, and after becoming the first American in space, GM handed over the keys to a special 1962 Corvette as thanks for his bravery.
Best I can come up with is Michelin Pilot Tires (Cup 2, Super Sports and 4S) which come on Z06
I thought about the tires but it seems like more than that because the VIN number sequence is mentioned. I just thought maybe it has to do with preproduction/ prototype cars, but would like to know if any knows for sure:

May be referring to pilot (test) production runs before "regular" manufacturing began. Probably were not for sale, but may have snuck out the back door. Hard to know.
