You have a point. I think marketing terminology here needs to be updated. They havent really cracked anything, they are basically reading the hardware encryption key off the actual chip on the physical box. This requires them to either drill into the box (so they can insert their diodes) OR pry open the box, hence the need for a new ecu and high cost.
Cracking the encryption would mean at the software level.
That assumes you know how it was done. If it were so simple, it wouldn't have taken so long, and others likely would have done it too.
What happens when you need to replace every control module in the car? I don't think this replacement approach is going to work in the future.
Yea you don’t have to do the replacement. You can remove the ecm and send to hp tuners to be unlocked. Buying a replacement just gives you two and the ability to go back to stock .... kinda.
