Default What's the catch with the C8?

I'm a cynical person so when I see the mid engine C8 to be sold starting for $60k I have to wonder, what is the catch? <!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;

Other cars like this start around $150k, right?

How can Chevy be doing this unless something is being compromised? and if so , what could it be? And if not, then how can other manufacturers justify selling their mid engine offerings in the six figure range?

I know people are automatically crowning this as a triumph and believing other manufacturers are somehow worried.......I just don't buy it, I'm skeptical. I want to wait for someone to review it and see how it plays out a year post release to see what problems it has.

Idk, I'm just skeptical that its all too good to be true. Maybe it'll be the reliability, the build quality, the actual performance........but the cynical part of me thinks there has to be some catch.

Default I wondered that too

This is true, but I don't think there is one. They lose money from every Vette under the 80k range. Seems like a win situation for the purchase. Where do I sign?! Lol

Go ahead and wait a year for the reviews, but there are so many reviews out now. I’m positive there are going to be problems with the 2020 as there is with any new model car. Nature of the beast. And no I am not buying one.

Default Because they can.

There is a very large mark up in new cars. Health care cost for employees who build the car cost more than the price of the steel in the car. Also other mid engine car mfg Jack up their price, and get it, just because they want to and people are willing to pay it.

Nailed it. One pays a lot for a Ferrari badge. Initially, then any time something needs to be fixed, which if you look at actual data happens quite often. Italian supercars fall apart fairly quickly, but most people whom buy them have more money than sense so they don't care. They just take them in to get fixed and that's that.

The main reason is volume. GM will likely sell 200k or more C8s over a six year run. Many of those models will be even higher margin editions than today’s car. Compare that to a manufacturer selling a few thousand cars a year and all the development and higher supplier costs due to lower volume that those fewer buyers have to absorb.

As someone who works in automotive manufacturing, this is spot on.

Volume is everything and once you reach the point of being able to afford automation over manually intensive operations, cost start to go down quickly. There is a point where diminishing returns start to be a factor, but the big difference between a Ferrari/Lamborghini/Vette is all volume. This is also why you get Camaros with the same engines/transmissions (back in previous generations), shared radios, shared switches, etc. Heck in the C4s the 700R4 got used in everything. The higher the volume, the lower price per unit.

I don't know about this "Losing" money claim though.

So would this be a win for the consumer versus the supplier? https://www.motor1.com/news/385310/g...base-corvette/

Let's see... If the average price was only $70k and they sell 40k per year.
$2.8B In revenue. Let's just say $3 billion in revenue.
I'm just not convinced they are losing money. But what do I know. I'm not an economist.
I think they are in the black after the first year's sales. Z06 will be well in the 6 figures.
Now we're talking $4B+ per year. I don't think Team Vette will go bankrupt anytime soon.

The catch is - they don’t make the $60K one?
