Default Now what?

Am I the only one struggling with this question(s)?

I currently have a C7 which I love very much. It's the most fun I've ever had in a car. That said, I'm starting to wonder, is it time to sell in preparation for the C8 or do I keep on making payments with the hope of trading for one next year? If I sell now, I'm likely to recover a lot more value than I will when C8s are on the lots but that means maybe a year or more with no Vette at all.

Part of me wants to jump on a new GS or Z06 (I just have a Stingray now) as the prices start to plummet but then I'd have to wait longer to get my hands on the C8. Is that a bad thing? Do I really want the first year run of the C8 or do I want to let them shake out the bugs before taking the ME plunge?

I'm not as financially well off as many of you. I'm not poor but I don't have money to burn either. That's why this is probably a bigger issue for me than it is for you guys with the deeper pockets.

Thoughts?

This is the neverending 'car-guy' dilemma. The next best thing will always be coming down the road. Take your car out for a drive today. If it still makes you smile, keep it. If it doesn't, sell it and try something else.

"Don't worry, be happy".
I'll probably keep my C7 for several more years, and then decide what to do next. No urgency.

I don't know whether anyone can say whether it would be better to sell a C7 now, when there are tons of new ones sitting on dealer lots, or wait until there are fewer of them.

Will the C7 hold it's value being the last of the FE Vettes? Will the C8 overshadow it so much that C7 values dive off a cliff? Nobody knows for sure.

Being such a radical change in design there are bound to be teething issues. I'll be looking into the C8 3-4 years into production when some (if not most) of the issues are worked out.

I'm waiting until the fervor dies down and hopefully the prices too. Early buyers of the C8 will pay a premium. My C7 is still under warranty with under 20k miles. I'll drive it for a couple more years.

I am keeping my C7 Z06 (2016) at least for another 4.5 years. I would never by the 1st year production car and I would have to wait for the "Z06" Version of the ME anyway (2nd year at least). I would just go ahead and by the Z06 after the prices go down a little more. If you buy it 3 years old, most (not all) of the heavy depreciation is over.

Faced something similar in February 2013! Had a 6 year old C6 Z51, saw the C7 when announced at the Detroit Show and knew C6 resale prices would reduce.

Put a hold fee on a C7 at MSRP with a very large Vette Dealer I knew would have enough allocations. Dealer or I did not know what that price would be. Placed an ad in Autotrader that April thinking it might take a month or so to sell. Sold in 2 days to a fellow who flew in from >1000 miles away and drove it home. Was a one car family for months before I got my September 2013 built Z51 (did use my Street Rod to go to the store when wife needed her SUV and rented a car to go to a meeting in NC, etc!)

Got top dollar for my C6 and no real issue being without a Vette for ~6 months. I will wait for the Grant Sport equivalent C8 and hopefully my 2017 GS will be fine until it is introduced.

I’d get a C7 Grand Sport while prices are low and consider a C8 after that version is available.

Me personally keeping my 2017 C7 Z06. It is already a beast of a car and like others have stated, I'll wait a few years after the C8 Z06 comes out then revisit. Not taking a chance on a first year car. Even on a three year old C7 Z06 they had some issues. I'll wait for the C8 Z06 and see if there are any major issues, bent wheels, transmission issues, etc. Heck, I may be priced out of a high performance C8 so I'm at least 4-5 years away. I'm excited to see the C8 but will wait until all the bugs are worked out. My so call "dated" C7 is still a beautiful machine. turns heads, and flies on the roads, so I'm still very content and blessed to own one of these cars. It's best to wait a little until the hype is over unless price and cost is no object.

The best choice financially is sell the C7 now... spring/summer demand spike, C8 hasn't been fully unveiled. Then put a $1K deposit with a major dealer to get a 2020 car sometime early '20. You'd go a year vetteless.

If you wait the C7 will just keep going down in value. Personally, I'm in the middle of a C7 trackday build and want to keep my car for my trackday car. A 2014 with 57K miles is a low $30K car right now trade-in.

Trying to figure out how to afford daycare and a car payment on a $70K car w/o getting rid of the C7

Man I don't know what to do. I have the 2017 Nike Air Jordan's that lace up the top of the shoe but the 2020's are coming out and they lace up the side. I hear this is going to be the end of the line for the top laces. Honestly I don't know what took so long. Everyone knows that side lacing is much better for stability and balance on the court. In fact Jordan always wanted Nike to manufacture the shoes with side laces from the beginning but Nike was afraid the general public wouldn't accept such a radical design and frankly they didn't have support from the CEO.

Now that the side laces Jordan's are coming out I'm wondering if it's time to maybe consider selling the 17s for when the 20s come out. It's such a 1st world dilemma...I mean I'm not going to be the cool kid on the block anymore...

Give me a break...

I'd wager this new mid-engine Corvette is a lot different then laces on a shoe. It's a substantial change... the biggest ever generationally. For those of us who can't afford to just add to the fleet, the timing of selling/trading can make a difference.

Most dealers are quoting selling at MSRP, outside of California that is : )

As much as I am liking what I see so far I won't be in line for the first year of production. It is super tempting but I think I will wait until some of the "teething" pains have past. I think this is a bigger deal due to the completely new configuration so I will wait and let others do the testing! But who knows, maybe it will all be good and then mid year I might jump in.

Drive the C7. In two years either by a low mile waxer owner garage queen or a deeply discounted new C8.

Just like the C7, the first 2-3 years of the C8 will have low depreciation before they start releasing the Z06/GS etc. then the prices of the Stingray dip with the high volume of cars on the market.

As others have said, the best financial decision is to sell the C7 now and put a deposit down. You'll be waiting about a year until you take delivery of your C8. If you really do not want to be without a Corvette, pick up a cheap used C5 or C4 until you get your C8. Even if you drive it all year, the depreciation is already done and you will not lose much when you sell it.

Sounds like a lot of work to save a few bucks... just drive and enjoy, buy the new one, don't stress about the delta in loss

For those of you that won’t buy a first MY because you’re afraid of potential problems, how many of you have actually bought a first MY before and had problems? I bought a first MY C6 and a first MY C7 and I only had each car in for service once. No regrets. I’ll probably buy a first MY C8 also. And if your rationale for waiting is that the C8 will be very different, GM has been building automobiles for a very long time. This isn’t their first rodeo.

IF you do not have to or need to sell it then why sell it? Some people will panic sell or sell in anticipation of the C8 release...sure. But it's not like the C7 is going to fall apart and stop working the day that the C8s start rolling off production. IF you love the car and don't need or have to sell it...keep it, pay the payment, and enjoy it.
