Engine view or not?
Hi All,
I do not see the engine being visible in the latest renderings? Do we think there will be an option or model that includes a hatch that allows clear view of the engine like exotics do?

It's been 25 years since Corvette had an engine worthy of being displayed.. and it was hidden.
If it's just a bunch of plastic covers and a rat's nest of wires and hoses I'd rather have the storage space.
If it looks this good hell yeah! Show it off

Probably on the ZR1.

Perhaps the non-visible hatch for the Base/GS models and the visible hatch for the Z models.

Exposed engine looks great when the engine is done up right without a bunch of fake plastic and crap. But it's very expensive for a manufacturer to do that.
There's
Here is my C6 engine as an example of what can be done.

I disagree that properly dressing an engine is expensive. I owned a Katech built and dressed engine in a C6 Z06, and it didn't cost much for the appearance. Spread that cost across a large number of units, and thus amortized, it becomes even less expensive.
I would assert that if GM chooses to display the engine (which I hope they do), it would in fact be indefensible on cost to not dress it appropriately.

I agree . My thought is if they choose not to display the engine it will be due to storage. Not cost. Will you be making a showing at the mile this fall?

I think you're right. If they punt on engine display it will be a result of them trying to capture more storage room. I hope on at least the hp models they show the engine and dress it right.
Looking forward to running the mile again. Need to get my schedule hammered out. After we got back after the last event, I counted up my total runs over the last 12 years - and I've got over 150 runs. Maybe the misses is right and I am hooked on speed. LOL.
You going to make it?

We will be there. I will be running the stock ZR1. Bubba will bring the beast . His twin turbo C5. He did 211 in the spring. Over 150 runs - 12 years . Very nice. Since I changed to stock cars and of course run slower I still enjoy The Texas Mile. Getting to be more of a social event . Still fun to rip off a 190 MPH pass though. Going to run a little taller tire and hoping for a tailwind. We are going to check out Bonneville speed week this year. Might have to consider a build a little further down the road.

I’d say there’s a 50% chance of a visible engine, 50% chance it won’t be visible.

Remember that our version of 'didn't cost much' and GM's version may be pretty different. From our perspective them spending an extra $800 per unit on the assembly line to have a nice looking V8 showing (maybe the last in a modern sports car) is chicken scratch. To the bean counters, it represents a significant price increase for an option that they deem many people (all women for instance) don't care about.
Look at the C6 ZR1 for some relativity. Poly hood panel, to show off a piece of molded fake plastic. Can you imagine something so tacky? But GM did it on a $140K sports car ($140K 8 years ago no less) instead of spending what you and I would consider a paltry sum to dress up the real thing.
You might not know this but the manufacturing costs of the actual car is dramatically less you may think. Sure that doesn't tell the entire story because development, factories, testing and so on absorbs so much cash and this bares out in profits. But the actual costs to manufacturer a single unit is less than $25K for sure for a Vette, much less for a pick up or sedan. I've read estimates that include raw materials/ labor/ energy to be as low as $8-14K for a single vehicle unit.
When people talk about that 'thing' that GM does that makes their vehicles seem cheap compared to others, nothing underscores that position like the fake plastic, showing through a hood on a ZR1, on a $140K top of the line sportscar.
I hope I'm wrong and we get a visible, real deal, powerplant. I'd love to see options to have engine parts color matched to the body color at the factory, similar to how mine is. Ceramic please for heat dispersion or retention where needed. I think that people would pay $2,900 for that option if given the chance.

Suns, I too hope you're wrong. I do like your suggestion of allowing it as an option. I'd gladly check that box. Btw, in all fairness to the C6 ZR1, that hood window didn't allow one to look through it to see a piece of plastic. It shows the aluminum intercooler lid on top of the supercharger. But, I get your point.
As to the cost, what might have a base, actual cost of a several hundred for what you and I have purchased for stand-alone builds (not what we paid, but what it actually cost to produce the parts), such cost gets squeezed down substantially when spread across the whole production of ME coupes.
Your point on the proclivity of bean counters to nix soul out of a machine, however, is a fair one and one with which I agree. It would great if Tadge didn't allow that in this respect (if they are actually going to display the engine).
