Jim, do you think base C8 can do the Ring in 7 min 18 seconds? : )

I have a number I feel it should accomplish, but out of complete respect for Tadge and Harlan, who were not thrilled with everything I said being taken out of context until I corrected the record, there's no way I'm going to dive back in the hornets nest again.....

My guess is they will run it with true stock tires and I do not think Cup's or CC brakes will be offered with the base car. Without R tires and with steel brakes, not a chance. Look at the current list from 7:45 and faster. A few cars with F1 Supercar tires but those have CC brakes. Unless I'm missing it, there is not a car since the 2006 ZO6 (3100lbs) that has run faster than 7:45 without CC brakes and/or R tires. If there is and I missed it, it's apparently still pretty tough to do.

@Jim Mero I've noticed Harlan and Kirk have gone silent on Facebook. I'm not friends with Tadge on there... I'm guessing some kind of security protocol or they don't want to be inundated with questions prior to the release.
Given the response to your interview, could you imagine being in politics for a living!?! Where every word and tone is analyzed and debated to death

Safety Car
Take a lap with Sabine Schmitz in her BMW M5. You will s..t yourself. I did 6 laps in my 87 928, 6 laps in my 93 ZR1 4 laps in my 02 C5Z and one with the fastest taxi driver in the world. I would be to scared to get into a C7 ZR1 with Jim at the Ring. 3 of us drove with Sabine and she gets a kick out of making grown men scream and holler like little girls.

He's been here since he retired. He started a mag ride tuning company for the C6 platform.

It depends on what it looks like. If it looks ugly, then no way it will do 7:18. Science. /s
What if there is a great new tire compound?

See what happened when using the word; "worried" RE: the C8, did? It was quite a headline word, BTW. I jumped right in to the interview. ..
Welcome to the real World....

All the test mules have been on PS4 tires.

Goes without saying...big fan of the C8. I built an Ultima GTR in 2005 with an LS7 that made 562hp. It was 2,250# and had 345/30-18 out back. Wicked car. The C8 should be even quicker and will likely set a category record at the ring.
That said, there's a new record - the electric VW ID.R just went 6:05.34, with a top speed of only 155 m/hp - 250 k/ph. Lap videos online. LOTS of HUGE down-force and Alcon carbon brakes (4-5G). It is 2,400# with driver and has 680 hp with 480 lb/ft torque. 0-60 is 2.25 seconds.

It was never officially published, but Jim lapped the Z51 around the Nurburgring in 7:39, and that was still with, according to Jim, leaving some time on the table. For those interested this is a really good read, and as always Jim we appreciate the impact you had on the Corvette during your career and your continued impact through interviews, forums, and your continued MRC tuning for previous generation Corvette!

totally believe that, now if you said 7:29, I would be suspect, if you said 7:19 I would raise the BS flag. Sub 7:20 is not happening with non-R tires, steel brakes and a car that weighs over 3000lbs. Simple Physics.

Cliff notes:
Mero drove, none of the runs were ever perfect which is why they weren't published by GM.
C7 Z51 did 7:39 (probably 3-4 seconds off due to bad weather conditions)
C7Z did 7:10
C7 GS did 7:27
C7 ZR1 did 7:04
My completely useless opinion is that it's unlikely that the C8 Z51 will run a full 17-20 seconds faster than the C7 Z51. I think knocking 5-10 seconds off is a reasonable expectation.
