Default eAssist powertrain the big surprise?

Wild speculation.

Could a version of the GM eAssist powertrain be the "surprise" in the C8?

It's already been running around on various GM products including the GM 5.3 Liter V8 L8B EcoTec3 Engine. Seems to need an auto trans.

while set to assist in the stop-start mode of fuel savings, it can also kick in for a power boost mode.

What other technologies could be applied?

"People may not realize the name GM Powertrain was changed to GM Global Propulsion Systems in 2016.
Part of the reason for the name change stems from the ongoing integration of electrified hybrids.
Corvettes have always had good fuel efficiency and don’t get saddled with the gas-guzzler tax. To add more power and performance to future Corvettes, we could see GM engineers implement their eAssist system called BAS 3 (Belted Alternator Starter).
BAS3 is a newer version of this BAS2 system used in the 2012 Buick Lacrosse. It was a mild hybrid that used a 115V lithium ion battery and 15kW motor.
It bolts simply to the accessory drive in place of the alternator. It’s a proven technology currently used in the 2016 Silverado and improves mileage 13 percent. Although it adds another 100 pounds, it provides 13 more horsepower and 44 foot-pounds of torque.
With an automatic, it serves as the starter motor for low-speed start/stop and take-off."

mixed feelings..... only because batteries do not last forever and in auto applications cost huge money to replace.

100 lbs is a lot of weight to add to a car that needs weight as low as possible. The extra HP may make up for acceleration loss but it can't offset decreased braking and cornering performance. The Vette is more than a straight line car.

I would be very disappointed if it were standard. I don't want all that stuff.

The start/stop crapology is an automatic deal breaker on any vehicle I own. I don't want it. I have absolutely no interest in it in any way.
