The C8 splash has been a very serious topic of conversation in Ferrari, Tesla, Porsche, Maserati, and surely some other forums I'm not a member of. There are no less than 5 different topics with C8 on ferrarichat. Jalopnik has mentioned it, and many of the followers over there are bringing it up repeatedly. I'm going to agree that it wasn't as 'monumental' as the whole Tesla thing, but the C8 has some significant buzz.

In the modern sports car world the C8 is a pretty big deal for bringing ME to the masses, and as a fundamental shift for an American icon, I have people that never really looked at corvette talking to me about the new car and its hit many main stream news outlets. Anytime I wear my C7 hat or get out of my C7 someone usually asks if I have seen the new one, I reply yes in fact I ordered one, and now some keep asking when its going to show up LOL

However I would say a few examples of bigger auto moments would be

The move to more EV cars
the model T for bringing cars to the masses
the Jeep for changing how wars are fought and rural exploring etc
the truck, for both transport, business, fire fighting, medical etc.

The C8 is pretty exciting to a lot of people though, inside and out of the vette community and I cant wait to drive mine, and I seldom get to excited about a car.

I'm giving it a lot of credit, but the fact remains it is a nearly two decade old car. That is a LONG time in the auto world.

OP asked for views on "most monumental" development in his lifetime. He is 47. Thus, mine and many of the answers here pertain to the most momentous developments since 1972, not in automotive history.

1)The 1967 Ferrari Dino. First mid engine Ferrari. (look where we are now)
2) The 911 becomes water cooled.
3) The Datsun 240 Z. The first real Japanese sportscar.

Very good list.

How about the 2005 ford mustang.

I know odd but it was the beginning of all the muscle cars coing back to retro/futuristic styling and probably ignited gm with the 2010 Camaro and then dodge with the charger and challenger resurrected

Or perhaps the return to the 5.0 in 2011 with 412hp. Just like the c8 Corvette, most of the world doesnt care much but mustang enthusiasts went nuts in 2011 over that engine

Although a monumental car, the 240Z was preceded by the Datsun 1600 Roadster in 1965 and the Toyota 2000GT first shown in 1965 and into production in 1967. These would be considered the first real Japanese sports cars on the international stage.

True, but I'd say the 240 Z had the most game changing impact by far in the U.S.

Certainly no argument there but we did sell the others as true Japanese sports cars.

What else could be so monumental? What previous car release was AS monumental?
Let's see the C2,C3, C5 and the C9.
