Default Convertible top storage area

It appears that when the Convertible Top is retracted, it is stored above the engine compartment. When the top is up, the area where the top is stored is empty. To work on the engine, this area must be accessed without lowering the top. I was wondering if this area could also be used for additional cargo storage. If it is, than the convertible would have more storage area than the coupe making it more desirable. Hasn't anyone addressed this issue at any of the reveals?

I would not store anything. It slips into the gearing and you are screwed

Thanks for the picture. It looks like it could be used for additional storage. Third Party vendors could offer a simple boxed section to keep items form entering the gear area. I know I could create a simple barrier that would contain items which would have tabs that could slide under the engine cover. The convertible is looking better and better for me all the time. All I need is the Z06 version and I am a buyer ...

It would be easy to create panels that would prevent anything form entering the gear area. If you look at the exterior hatch, it provides additional area to contain the storage as well as anything you create to prevent stored items from entering the gear area. My main concern would be to make sure you don't accidentally trigger folding of the top while you have items stored there. You would have to discipline yourself.

Since I am interested in a Z06 version, if they decide on supercharging the Z06, it would take up some of this area making the availability of a Z06 convertible less likely ...

I agree the Pizza comment was a funny comment but if you really look at it, there is more depth there than you realize. The actual depth you have will hold the folded top and is probably at least 10 inches deep by the width and length of the top.. That's good enough for a couple of laptops and some clothing. Will have to see it in person to know for sure.

Technically the convertible has MORE storage than the coupe because you never have to use any of it to store the top.

How in the hell does it make sense to try to store stuff in there when you've got two other relatively large areas that are actually meant for storing stuff? Maybe someone can build a little bin to sit on top of the engine in the coupe too.

I think they will twin turbo the Z06. No extra space needed.

We have been doing long distance trips with our various Corvettes for over 18 years. This included one C5, a C6Z06 and now a C7 Z06. Besides being fun vehicles to drive, the Corvette has been a fantastic vehicle on both the track and as a touring vehicle. Each new generation of the Corvette has slowly had a reduced amount of Cargo space. The C5 well over 16 Cubic Feet, the C6 and C7 loss some depth and width between the tires at a modest 15 cubic feet and now the C8 Coupe with 12.5 cubic feet. Our trips are many times at least a week in length and require a well thought out packing scheme. We have met many other Corvette enthusiast with similar interests and you'd be surprised on how clever many are in using every little space for their cargo. On C4's I have seem them use space in the headlight area.

In the past, convertibles made this choir even more difficult. With the C8 design, the engineers were clever enough to create a design that provides storage space at least the equal to the coupe. However, we did lose 2.5 cubic feet of storage when compared to the previous generations. If there is a way to get some of this 2.5 cu ft of lost storage I am game for it.

Excellent question ... If it warm enough, it would make an excellent area to store several Pizzas ... I am sure you don't want to store your Banana Split there .. All joking aside, not having seen the convertible in person I am not sure what material is used for the top's headliner. If its cloth or canvas, I am sure GM took this into account and protects it from any heat damage. If it is cloth, canvas or plastic, I am sure the fine engineers at GM took this into account and provided enough insulation to avoid damage. Hence clothing, brief cases or even small suit cases should survive without any ill effects. I would hesitate to store any decorative candles there however.

It's insulated well enough to not damage the plastic top and cloth (or vinyl?) lining.

Originally, I was going to order the C8 Convertible, however after seeing it I have changed my mind. Several reason, I really like the look of it with the top down, but I thought the top was going to retract and rest between the front passenger area and engine compartment, thus still allowing for outside engine visibility. Now that’s not the case, I don’t think there is a $7,500 benefit. I’m just going to wait until some form of the widebody comes out, either the ZO6 or Grand Sport. Your thoughts?

Buy a vert because you want the top down driving experience at the push of a button and will go topless regularly. If open air motoring is not a priority, save the $7500. The targa top comes off easily if you want open air on an occasional basis.

For me the vert will be worth it. I take the top off whenever practical and don't care whether the engine is visible or not.

I have a C7 Convertible if I really want the air, so now the targa in the widebody is next for me.
