Negative Friends Hating on your C8

Dismissing your success is a way for them to come to terms with their lack of success. Just smile and enjoy my friend.

I've so often said "One has many acquaintances in life and a few friends!" The word "Friend" is a heavy word to me! Sounds to me OP, that you're talking about acquaintances!!

What are they driving? Maybe it would help to put it in perspective. People look the C8 and think it's a $200,000 car and might not know it starts at $60,000. You can pay less for a C8 than people pay for SUVs, pickup trucks, luxury sedans, etc.

Only negativity I got was from an ex, albeit before I was even on a list for it. But he was extremely scornful and critical of everything I did even though he was just an ex at that time anyway. Funny coming from someone who abused their C4 and left it to rot in the streets of chicago.
What I’m saying is - get new friends! Plenty to be had at the car shows you’ll bring your C8 to! You’ve got plenty of friends and positive affirmations from here too.

That's why there are so many unsuccessful people in this country. Seeing others success should inspire other people to do better but I guess it's easier just to spew jealousy and negative energy because that takes a lot less effort than putting in hard work year after year.

I love my new car I haven’t been boastful that I have it . The only way anyone knows I have it is if the have come over and we went to the garage which is typically what we do . I have heard so many negative comments about why I would need such a car ,Why would you buy something like that etc . So much negative I guess it’s jealousy but it sure is a downer anyone else experience this reaction from anyone .
A little background info I’m 44 this is the first time I have ever owned a Corvette ( and it’s awesome I’m hooked ). I grew up pretty poor but worked real hard for everything I have. I opened my own contracting company 10 years ago and it’s done well. I decided that life is short and I wanted a C8 . I never dreamed of the negative pushback from my supposed friends . Not all have been this way but a few have I guess it is jealousy. But it’s a shame that they have to try to rain on my parade . Was curious if any one else has had any comments from friends when they saw your car

I'm not much older at 48, but have owned Corvettes since I was 30. I too started my own business (at 27) and a Corvette was always a childhood dream of mine, which helped "justify" the purchase to anyone who knows me. There are some people who don't get it, regardless of their income. My experience / theory for why some people question these kind of purchases REGARDLESS of their financial situation, is:
- A. Most people see cars as transportation only and do not get the passion side...these people also have usually never driven a car like this.
- B. Some people find it literally painful to spend money. I'm mean, it pains them to justify purchasing an extravagant vacation, car, home, tv or even iPad. Therefore they can't imagine doing what you did.
- C. Jealousy is absolutely part of it. Whether it is affording it in the first place, having the stones to pull the trigger or something else, some will preach deadly signs, yet "envy" rules their happiness.
Practicality is a factor too. From your brief bio, I don't think this is the case but if you are renting (or living with your parents), in debt up to your eyeballs, 2 kids to support, live in a rural area with a lot of bad roads AND this is your only car, then your friends should bust your ***** over the decision. If this is not the case, enjoy your new C8 and don't sweat the flack...but maybe consider who your real friends are.
Last thought...Sadly, for what's worth, I have only a few friends from "before" I started my businesses. The best of friends will never go away and they are happy for you (as you are for them) regardless of how good or bad they are doing. Others can't get over your success and you'll find new ones who can relate to you. Most of my friends now are similar affluence, business owners, entrepreneurs, docs and dentists. They never give me **** about these purchases and are sincerely happy for my achievements.

I had negative comments on my c7 when I first got it. Not by my friends though. I drove it to work one day and one of my customer scoffed at me and said, "so this is what you doing with our money".

I don't brag, post about my Corvette on social and have really only shared it with a select few. I know who the jealous haters are and I don't share with them.

What part of the country are you in? People's attitudes changes depending on location. In warmer areas you see corvettes all the time so they are no big deal.

My experiences have been entirely different.
Everyone digs my C8 HTC and liked my other Corvettes, too.
In fact, most noted when I sold my 2015 convertible in June and asked why I sold it. Told them I was awaiting a new one. Literally, on almost a daily basis someone asked when the new one was getting here. 🙂
After the HTC was built two friends accompanied me for Museum Delivery for no other reason than to share the experience and my excitement. 😎
Cheers!

To "non-car people", purchase of a new sports car is seen as frivolous and silly. Paying TWICE as much for an SUV or pickup wouldn't get such a response because it would be considered "utilitarian".
If I ever received any negative comment about buying a new Corvette, I would say the same thing I do when I get a complement on my car...
"I REALLY enjoy it, it's SO much fun to drive!"

A lot of people will not bat an eye about spending money on vacations, huge houses, expensive SUV/Trucks, but for reason spending money on a sports car is somehow extravagant.

1) Need new friends who are not going to be jealous and can be happy that it makes you happy (I have had to do that with my car hobby)
2) Join a Corvette or other car group and start going to Cars & Coffee events where you will meet a bunch of people who will appreciate your C8 but WARNING...even within those groups are jealous & narcissistic people
But here is my story...so previous car was a 991 Turbo and a while back I got invited to join a local Super Car group. You know all Ferrari's McLarens, Lambo's, etc...great group of enthusiast and do a lot of events (Runs, dinners, charity events, etc...). Anyway my Turbo was coming up on 7 yrs old and no warranty and I got a ridiculous offer to sell it so I did. I have had my eye on the C8 since 2020 and there are quite a few around where I live. I had decided I wanted to wait a few years and see how they do. Well I am impressed and I don't even mind the jump in cost in the market because unlike Chevy I do not think everyone should be able to afford a Corvette...they need to become more exclusive IMHO and give the exotics a run for the money. I hope the Z06 does that to be honest. Anyway my buddy owns a private dealership and started looking for one for me and he found my car (2022, 2LT, Z51, GT2 seats) so I am now a proud owner of a C8 (I owned a 2016 Z06 a while back...see my username).
Long story but here is my point...So I reach out to the guy running the Super Car group thinking I no longer meet their requirements for membership and tell him I sold the Turbo and picked up my C8 (sent him pics) and his response is what you want around you in your life. His reaction and the entire group was SICK CAR!!! And being mid-engine and with a frunk it meets a few of the requirements but I think it is more about the friendships I have built in the group. These are the kinds of reactions you want when you show someone your gorgeous C8...if not it may be time to move on. Just my 2 Cents
