Quality was so shitty they were ashamed to sell it so they punted the model year to work on c4 (there were a couple made they say) Anyone with an 82 can probably attest...

The tail light lenses on my 1960 Corvette say Guide 1959. Drunks at bars come up to me an tell me I have the wrong tail light lenses after they have argued in the parking lot about the year of the car. Its happened at least twice.

NOTE that the first C4's were delivered to customers in March of 1983. They were 1984 model year Corvettes. I got mine a month later at the Chevy dealer on Peachtree in Sandy Springs, a northern suburb of Atlanta. From a quality standpoint, it really was a piece of crap.... but it still was the latest, greatest Corvette at the time.

GM released the C3 Corvette as the 1968, and it was arguably the worst quality Corvette ever built, so GM wasn't about to repeat that mistake again in releasing the C4 before it was ready.
