Default How Bad Is This? Or Is It?

Curious your thoughts. Wondering if I got hosed...

So, got around to oil change #3...2.8years old--11,400 miles. The inflation factor here sequentially: 1.) $0 (comp)...2.) $135... 3.) $183

$183 Oil Change seems high to me bit maybe I'm naive ($75 for labor)?

So, the oil change price was a bit of surprise...but also told I needed

Brake Fluid Flush---$149.07 and

Cabin Air Filter (filter+climate control kit) $130

Engine Air filter $129.82.
Yes, its a Chevy Dealer.
Necessary? If so--how much overcharge?TIA

Out the door: $650.29

What does the service/maintenance schedule in the Owner's Manual say about when to change/service what?

Cabin Air filter is advised for 15K I'm 11.4 NBD there--I'm more concerned with all the pricing. Honestly just wondering IDK

At first I’d say the oil change is high but not crazy. As soon as you said the dealer says you need to do all the this and that my opinion changed to find another dealer.

Why would the Subaru oil change cost $148? The oil changes with full synthetic at the Subaru dealer near me are $69 - which I find too high because I can change it myself for less.

I do my own oil changes for under $100 for the oil and filter so I guess $183 is not too bad. The Delco cabin filter is $21 on Amazon and is an easy 5 minute replacement. I don't know what a climate control kit is, never heard of it. The air filter cost about $100 . You can go on your DIC and see what percentage remains . It's life is determined by time and usage. I have a 2021 with 5000 miles and I have 31% left. Not sure about the brake fluid cost but overall I think they overcharged you.

Seems a touch high depending upon area, but not unreasonable. For everything else, you have or can download the owner's manual which tells you:

Brake Fluid Flush---$149.07 and

So, at 3 years, no need to do this.

Since you were beyond 2 years, seems like this is probably due.

Did you have a message to replace? If so, it was needed, if not, then it was not.

Also, should note at 3 years you will need transmission fluid change, and if you did not have it done at 7,500 miles, you are overdue for the filter change.

Best thing for people to do is to review the manual before going to the dealer, or to have PDF on the phone to read it and double check the dealer. The service advisor is getting commission to sell you stuff you don't need...

Your brake fluid only needs to be changed every 5 years so that wasn't necessary. And the engine air filter is every 45K miles or 4 years so that probably wasn't necessary yet. It's best to know what services are actually necessary (in the owner's manual) before going to the dealer.
The prices don't seem unusual for dealership prices but you could save some money doing this stuff yourself or going to an independant shop.

So the engine air filter message never came on--that means it was not needed now at 2.5 years 11,4k miles?
.
Appreciate the excellent advice and yes, I need to go in fully aware of the service manual guidelines.

Even I knew the cabin air filter was a complete rip off at 6 times the cost of the part and minutes to install.

Of course when I went in to a greater Boston dealer with Macmullin plates I assume I was ripe for a killing lol

Brake Fluid flush at 2.4 years old 11,400 miles, that's ridiculous. Sounds more like they gave you a "Wallet Flush" .

I don't know how it is where you live, but here in Michigan, you must approve services before they are performed. why did you let them get away with this?

Because he trusted the dealership to guide him on what needs to be done. According to Chevrolet "Trust the experts - Get the best possible service - no one knows your vehicle better than our factory trained experts". Unfortunately that was a mistake. In reality it is up to the customer to know what is necessary better than the factory trained experts.

This is exactly true. They called me after I dropped off the car and went out with my wife. 2 hours after it was dropped off all they did was the oil change and a recall software issue. Then they call me and say “ you really need to do these things also”. I learned a lesson. You really need to do the homework yourself. Before. Very much appreciate the feedback. This has always been a fantastic community of generous owners. Thanks.

Simple. If you don't want to pay the dealer do it yourself. What's your time worth?

I agree that would be better. But in this case if I did completely unnecessary work myself I’d be equally dumb but less poor

I'm not sure but I think dealers are supposed to tell you which services are required per the maintenance schedule and which services are optional but recommended by them, and let you make the decision. But this may not be true. At any rate it shows how poorly Chevrolet monitors a dealer when they certify them. Chevrolet tells you to trust your dealer but then lets things like this happen. If they send you a survey I'd ding them on performing services that weren't required per the maintenance schedule.
