My guess slightly less cost to mold and fit one word.

It was a tough love command. Ray had been lipping off for a while, and it was time to teach him a lesson.
p.s. I'm interested in the actual explanation as well.

Early on, two different generations, I guess the C2 and C3 wording had to be different, just guessing here.

Schwinn was using sting-ray with a hyphen, so that there would not be any confusion between the bicycle and the car.........OK, thats not the reason

Interestingly, the Sting Ray was preceded and influenced by the Stingray Special racer/development car. So originally, it was one word - albeit not on a production version.

Actually, the original 1959 StingRay racer had one word on the emblem, but with both S and R in larger letters. That emblem on the C2 had similar letters, but with a space between the two words. If you blow up the emblem on pic below, (taken last month with my silver 63 at the EyesOn Design concours) you’ll see this was true.

Also, over time two words used together tend to combine as people become familiar with them.
A good example: "Week end" became "week-end" became "weekend."
On this principle it's not surprising that "Sting Ray" became "Stingray."
Of course, GM could change it back whenever they wanted, but people still likely would tend to write it as one word.
