I think the C8 just killed the Factory Five LS engined GTM. Their kit is $25k. You then need a donor C5. And a Porsche transaxle which can typically cost $10k, so we are up to $45-50k at that point. They sell used for $50k and up. Why would anyone pop for one of those when you can have a C8 with a new car warranty for $60k?
Factory Fives and all assembled vehicles are really a different animal. I seriously considered getting a Cobra before settling on my C6 vert. I get the desire. It because you get to build the car your self. It can take from several weeks to several years. It is really more about the build process than the car itself. Then once it is built you've got a car that has and engine, well, it will have any HP you want it to have, but in a car that weighs slightly over 2,000 LBS. It's crazy fun. But, yeah, it's not for the faint of heart or those with light wallets. When I did the figuring for mine this is what is came out too;
All if this you have to pay for before hand because it is not considered a car for loan purposes. So you need to have the cash to do it or put your house up as collateral. Unlike a Vette which you can finance just like any other car.
Then you've got to build it.
Then you've got to somehow get it registered, which is always a hassle because the people at the DMV can never understand just WTH you have.
At the end of all of this it just was not worth it to me. But there are people that love it.
I drove a GTM when I was considering building one. Utter POS doesn't even begin to explain it. It was f'n awful. Now Rossion and Ultima, totally different story.
