Well, the rumor is that it would be engineered by the Corvette team, or an extension of it, to be a high-performance SUV. GM does not have a competitor to the Porsche SUVs, but the Corvette competes with other Porsches. By using the engineering and design of the Corvette team to make an SUV and a Sedan, GM can create a brand with a Porsche-like portfolio.
This SUV and sedan would attract new customers to GM and would be a great second car for Corvette owners. Lots of sports car owners have a second, more practical car as a daily driver or family vehicle, or they use their wives car for that purpose. Why let customers or their wives roam freely to other premium brands to get an SUV or sedan when you could offer a better one, created by the same people as your Corvette, for less?
I am a fan of this strategy and I don’t see it as watering-down the Corvette name, if it’s done right. The sedan and SUV need to use good engines, like Cadillac’s top twin-turbo V6, the LT2(maybe as a hybrid), and a low-displacement TT V8. GM should offer a Z51 package just like the C8’s, but with the base C8 tires for the SUV. The interior quality needs to be on the same level as the C8’s, as do the standard features. I don’t care if the base prices are high, as long as they cost a good bit less than similarly-equipped Porsches, Audis, and BMWs. I have no clue what to name them, but I do know that they should be sold and serviced at Cadillac dealers, unless GM finally makes Chevy dealers create their own Corvette departments.
This would be a cash cow for GM, and that’s the main reason to make a Corvette SUV and Sedan. They would also have the opportunity to make Corvette its own brand with just as many sales as Cadillac. I’m not sure if they would go down that road, but it would allow for stand-alone Corvette dealers with Corvette-only service departments or Cadillac/Corvette dealers similar to Chevy/Buick/GMC dealers that currently exist.
GM gets more money, you get Corvette-specific mechanics at dealers, and your wife gets a fantastic new car that’s very similar to yours. Everybody wins!
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
If chevy released something like this today, I would march right down to the dealer and purchase as a replacement for the Macan.
Why so much hate? You know how your Corvette feels so much more planted to the road, the performance... do the same in a SUV, please. Instead of XLR, name it SVR or something...SXR 4 wheel drive, baby.
