Among other things, the ELSD allows features like Performance Traction Management (PTM) offering 5 different Track settings (Wet, Dry, Sport 1, Sport 2, and Race), which debuted in the C7. It is a tremendous innovation.
It's not just useful for track work. Track PTM Wet is a terrific setting for spirited driving on the street, and it's a great alternative to regular Weather mode which just basically dampens the the throttle response.

For example the LSD on my 2013 ZL1 works really well (even on the track) and I don't see a lot of improvement over the ELSD on the Z06. I would get the Z51 over the base model, but I wouldn't use the ELSD as a reason.
