Default ME maintenance

Given the cars will be new and with a warranty, some dealer tech gets to work on them, but a large number of us have done or do our own wrenching particularly when mods are involved.

Has anybody spent any time either working on a ME car or even spent some time on watching somebody else wrench on a ME on YouTube? Very interesting. You get to the front of the motor by pulling the seats and removing a panel (plus whatever is in front of that panel) behind the seats. That gives you access to the front of the motor. A lot more trouble than opening the hood. And packaging is going to be a lot tighter. I presume unlike other ME exotics you won't have to pull the motor to do simple maintenance. Getting to the tranny shouold be easier as it is simply below the trunk.

Some things to consider.

So which is it, maintenance or mods? Maintenance no big deal, mods depends on the mod. A cam, drop the motor.

You're overthinking it, now you won't need a lift in your garage just one of these:

My mid engine MR2 Spyder is just a 4 cylinder, but the same exact motor is in the front of other vehicles. I think it is easier to work on it from the rear because you can reach all parts of the motor, and there is more open space in the rear. Making oil changes is exactly the same than if the motor is in the front. There is no reason to drop the motor for any maintenance, but if you had to it is easier than if the motor is in the front. You just take off a few bolts and disconnect the wiring and coolant line, then just lift the body off of the motor. The motor, trans-axle, and wheels stay on the ground. Many people have done it in their garage. You can winch it off with straps on all four corners from above, or you can use a cherry picker to life up the rear, but you have to have the front on jack stands to keep the nose from hitting the ground. Very easy to do with a two post lift.

Other than driving it, all I've done on my Vette the last 7.5 years is "change the oil and filter" at reasonable intervals, wash, clean and polish it. My race ramps and quickjack should migrate over with NO issues....so if I can do the same on the C8, that's all I need.

And that likely will be the best way. Given how far the engine was set back in the 4th Gen Camaros and under the cowl, it was easier to raise the car off the engine, crossmember and front suspension that get at it from the top. I pulled a motor on one from the top but had to strip it down to the block to get it out the top. I also did a head and cam on my C4 and it was easier to do it by dropping the motor out the bottom although that time I did it in a Dealer Service Bay so had a good lift and roller table to drop the engine on.

Actually a cam alone on the LT2 will likely be very easy to get to from the interior of the car if it has access behind the seats. It will be the DOHC twin turbo that will need to be dropped out for a lot of the fun work.

Has anybody seen whether there is an access panel behind the seats? Doesn't Porsche Cayman have one? Not that Porsche has anything to do with Corvette, just an observation that it can be done.

I'll tell you this - installing a new exhaust on a ME is a PITA. I put a Stasis on my R8 and it was pretty involved. I ordered a Z51 C8 so hopefully I'll be satisfied with the factory performance exhaust.
