The C8 comes only with an automatic transmission while the C7 had an available automatic. There is a significant difference between the two transmissions used...the C8 unit's design is missing one of the major components of the unit used in the C7 automatic. What is that component?

Assuming a real question and not just a test to see IF I know the answer! That component is a torque converter or what some of would say makes an old tech automatic, a "slush box!"
PS: Not space to define the detailed differences so suggest you find some youtube video's. However the C8 DCT is essentially a standard shift that is shifted with hydraulic devices NOT a manual stick. One key is it's more like two standard transmissions. One is in the next gear while the other is engaged. Then the clutch for the one driving the car is released and a millisecond later the clutch for the other transmission already in the next gear is engaged. Hench the words (Dual Clutch.) It has about the efficiency of a standard shift and not the wasted energy pumping all the fluid in a torque converter and a clutch pack used for each gear in an old tech automatic..

Duh, the DCT doesn't have a conventional fluid-drive torque converter.Either can be shifted manually, and with the more advanced versions of either one, the driver can hardly tell the difference,

The C8 has a DCT, and while it may do the shifting for you , it has not fluidic converter that GM automatic transmission of the past have used. It is, in effect, a computer controlled manual transmission with a computer doing the shifting for the driver. You can call it an automatic, because it can shift automatically, but it is different genre of automatics.
C7 had a "slush" clutch (converter) automatic transmission.

The clutches are like manual clutches (except they are multiplated and run in an oil bath).

Hmm, agree! OP didn't say who was right. Was it the toque converter as I "guessed" or perhaps the OP was referring to the clutch pack and many planetary and sun gears on each A8 gear? What does it take to win that $50 coupon for product where I only have to pay $55 for shipping!
Maybe he just thought we were like Vinny's girlfreind:
