Why would you want to text message while driving? Shouldn't you be driving?
I've seen too many Fn morons on the streets risking people's lives for being stupid. I'm all for individual freedoms until the fist someone throws ends up hitting my nose.
Seems to be true. Just got 2020 Cadillac XT5 and XT6. Neither vehicle allows text messaging. If you want to text message you need to plug in the phone and use either Apple Carplay or Android Auto. Sucks

Yup. Yesterday I had a woman pull her big SUV out of a side street in front of me to get 3 lanes across. She was going maybe 10 MPH, then slowed while still crossing in front of me - focused on her hand held phone call.
I do like how my $28K Subaru reads incoming texts to me orally.
It appears that our technically advanced vehicle will not let us Text Message! Is this true?
The C7 could receive texts when paired with your phone, and then supported responding with predefined messages. Perhaps GM feels the liability is too great, so it’s been discontinued for the C8?
I had the same issue when I traded in my 2016 Cadillac CTS for a 2019 XT4, contacted Cadillac and this was their response
I did like my CTS feature allowing me to keep my phone in my pocket and the text would automatically appear on my screen!
The Cadillac Next Gen CUE system was designed to link your smartphones capabilities into the CUE for text messaging. The smartphone integration allows for a safer voice recognition experience when the CUE system will speak your text messages to you and allow for a voice response to your reply. This is done through Android Auto where your phones screen is emulated to the CUE.
Download the Android Auto app to your smartphone from the Google Play store. Then plug your factory provided phones USB cable for your LG G4 into the XT4’s USB port in the center console. Unfortunately, Bluetooth technology is not fast and reliable enough, at this time, to transmit large amounts of data like Google Maps through Bluetooth 4.1. For more information on Android Auto and to find the link to the app please follow the link below.
In the 2023 model year Google Assistant and Google Maps will be integrated into GM vehicles. I see that you purchase a new Corvette every couple of years. I suspect the awesome 2020 Corvette C8 will be utilizing this safer to use voice technology as laws are being enacted to limit distracted driving accidents.

That doesn't suck at all. Voice texting with Siri via CarPlay w/ Siri is simply awesome, not to mention Google Maps, Waze, phone, music, all of it. All 4 of our vehicles have it, and it works perfectly. The first thing I do in every one of them is plug my phone in.
CarPlay text works better than any vehicle system I've ever seen before. Siri is a much more accurate listener.

Your experience with Siri voice texting does not match up with the gobbledegook I get from one of my buddies. More than half the time I cannot figure out what he actually was intending to say.

Big Dave has it right in post # 8. All of my cars support text messaging via Bluetooth when my phone is set to allow it, even without using phone projection (CarPlay, Android Auto).
It was my understanding that the C8 has the technology for OTA updates, maybe an OTA update will allow this int he future? My Tesla didn't originally have it and now it does.

Couldn't agree more! Of the 40,000+ people killed in the US by vehicles each year, the largest cause is distracted driving! Recall the large multinational company I had worked for years ago instructed all folks with company cars who "used a cell phone" when driving would be fired! Unfortunately many companies and individuals don't care.
I have my iPhone set to NOT receive calls when driving. If a passenger it will "ask" if I want to defect the block! Wish more folks would consider that even "hands free" use causes some distraction! Won't happen until Insurance companies etc treat cell phone use like drunken driving! In the meantime I'll spend my time watching for the AH drivers who are distracted- best I can!
I don't have any sort of ability or app that allows texts to appear on my screen and I don't want it. I've got a button on my steering wheel that allows me to answer calls and talk hands free and that's all I want. If someone REALLY needs to get me ASAP, they can call. Otherwise, I'll look at my texts when I stop the vehicle. I will never change in this regard.
I have written letters to companies and elected officials trying to get them to make cell phones non useable when moving like the nav in your car. Basically like the do not disturb when driving feature on iPhones, but make it mandatory. I have known too many good people killed by these friggin idiots who can’t put their stupid phones down. Just had someone blow through an intersection and RED light she never saw the other day in the middle lane at about 50 MPH texting. Most people I know don’t even have the do not disturb feature turned on, so it should be done for them. I think it will happen, it’s just a matter of time.

Well, I've certainly run across folks whose speech is nearly incomprehensible when they speak directly face-to-face. Voice recognition technology doesn't have a chance with those suffering from that affliction.

I agree with you 100% when it comes to actually "texting" and fiddling with the phone. But that's not the way messaging works with CarPlay. You click on a button, and Siri takes over from there. Everything happens by voice, and you don't have to touch either your phone or infotainment display except for that one button press.
It's no different than pressing a button to change a radio station, which have been in vehicles for almost 100 years. Yes, the first car radio was fitted to a Ford Model T in 1922.
