You will get a notice on the Nav screen that you have a download. It will give you option to download now or later and tells you how long it will take.
it will also warm you that you cant open doors or start car. Best to do at home in the garage.

I set up the car with my home wifi in the garage. No updates as yet. This will be the way for me in the future as I'm not getting OnStar. Unless OnStar "pushes" a download even if I don't subscribe. Not sure about that.

GM is late to this party, but as others have stated the process is essentially automatic. You click on a button to update when prompted.
The 2015 Cherokee Trailhawk I recently traded had this capability and FCA pushed 3-4 updates during the 4 years I owned it. There was a also security recall that was handled easily when they mailed a USB flash drive to owners of record. No trip to the was dealer required. All loaded quickly and successfully.
Updates were provided even though I didn't have a subscription to FCA's equivalent to OnStar (UConnect), and did not subscribe to the Wi-Fi hotspot service either.

Yup in my Tesla model X I’ve had probably 15 different over the air updates. Most of them have turned out very well

Thank you everyone. I am asking for the c8. So i understand that the upload will work WHITHOUT an internet subscription, in the middle of nowhere. Is it by onStar? If so, only in the included free period?

As I said above, if GM handles the updates the same way FCA has been doing it for the last 5-6 years, you will not need an OnStar subscription to receive them. Even if you don't subscribe to their other services, your car will still be connected unless you rip it out.
It benefits them to do it that way because it saves a manufacturer warranty costs for dealer updates.

Don't have a C8, but my 2020 equinox got a update recently. It comes over the onstar network. Heres from my owners manual :
"Vehicle Software Updates: OnStar or GM may remotely deliver software updates or changes to the vehicle without further notice or consent. These updates or changes may enhance or maintain safety"

Tesla OTA updates are downloaded to your car via your wifi at home. Once they are downloaded you receive an push notification to your phone, as well as the cars touch screen, that an update is available. You decide when you install it.
