Question about ordering a C8
How does all this work?
You must go to a dealer. No deposit can be made online. The dealer will then put you on a list of people. They may or may not take a deposit at that time. When the have an allocation for a 2021 build for you then they will contact you to build the car to your spec. There are no more allocations for 2020 Corvettes. You need to verify that they will be charging you MSRP or will they be adding an additional dealer markup. Once the car comes in you pay them the balance and the car is yours.
Keep in mind that you are very late to the C8 ordering game. Most dealers already have the majority of their potential 2021 allocations spoken for since the 2020 production year numbers will be smaller than projected.

And, you can do that. Its a good start. You're not obligated to buy it. You're asking for information from a dealer. Similar to walking in the front door and asking to speak to a salesperson.
IMO, in addition to this you're better off talking to several dealers, including some of the biggest Corvette dealers in the country, to see what your options are. All Chevy dealers are not alike. The biggest selling Corvette dealers have more future inventory to sell than smaller selling dealers. You might get it faster with a larger Corvette dealer. And they can ship it or you can do museum delivery.
Then put down a deposit with the dealer who you think will do the best job of getting you a car by schedule or price or convenience. And get it in writing as usual what you are getting and what you are paying before you sign the document.
