Bizarre gadget in C8
There are lots of features about the C8 that would vie for most interesting, coolest, greatest, most useful. But you'd be hard-pressed to find a gadget that was more bizarre than this one. Page 26 of the Owner's Manual describes it as a "glow-in-the-dark emergency hatch/trunk release handle on the inside back wall of the storage compartment." The manual goes on to say that: "This handle will glow following exposure to light. Pull the release handle to open the hatch/trunk from the inside."
The first and most obvious question is what could this possibly be used for? In the C7 series, you could climb through the trunk and pull a similar cord to open the trunk in an emergency where no key was available. But in the C8, with the engine in the way, the major question is how the heck would you get access to this gadget without a key? If anyone figures this out, please let me know.

It is required in all US cars with an enclosed trunk and has been since 2001. It was made mandatory because of kids playing and locking themselves in trunks, and worse yet, folks getting abducted and stuffed there.

In case a kid gets into the rear storage area (roof storage) and shuts them self in.

These are required by federal law in case a child is accidentally locked inside.

How is this “bizarre” if it’s been a federally mandated requirement for nearly 20 years?

Seems to me this is one of few threads where the answers remained factual without insults . . . so far. OP asked the specific question and got multiple factual answers all saying the same thing.

If you thought this was harsh, you really should avoid OT.

VERY unpopular feature with Mobsters. Gotta whack the guy or really duct tape them up before you toss them in the trunk. Or they may get away.
Really complicates the process.

Remember when trunks were large enough for 3-4 bodies? Now you have to cut them up to golf bag size. and only two will fit.

As far as I know a trunk glow in the dark release handle is required for all new cars in the US.

Yeah, and that really gets messy. Ever tried to remove blood splatter from carpet ?

This simplifies the issue. No blood splatter issues. Just hose it out after use. Also great for unruly grand kids ...............

Nothing new... common in cars for years, as I'm sure everyone else has said.
