Default First oil change

When are you doing your first oil change? Chevy says you don't need one until 7500 miles but that seems like a long time to me. I'm at 1600 miles and thinking I might want to do one now. Any thoughts other than "do what makes you happy"?

I'm waiting until the car's oil life indicator tells me it's time to do so.

Sounds like a good plan.

I'm normally a fan of using the OEM recommended intervals and the car has a very good OLM. I should be getting my car end of July and first track weekend will be October at VIR with NASA. I'll probably have the Chevy 7,500 mile service done in September and have the track-overfill done at the same time. I.e. just go ahead and do the engine oil/filter and trans filter and have them top it off for the track fill. Will be good to go for 22.5K miles or 3 years after that for the trans; depending on how many hours I track it.

I did my first oil change and inspection at 1600 miles. I know what the manual says but if there is some sort of problem, I don't want to drive it for 7500 miles before finding out.

I had a whole schedule of how I used to do regular then synthetic, but now the C8 is already on C8, I'll be following GM's instructions.

BTW, 6 qts is on sale at Amazon for $46.86

I'm sure my dealer would be glad to give it a once over at 500-1500 mikes N/C. I'll be discussing it with them when I pick mine up in a few weeks - Hopefully.

I’ll be doing mine at 7,499. Just so I can say I did it prior to 7,500.

Since Chevy is on the hook for claims made under the powertrain warranty, it would not make sense for them to recommend an oil change interval longer than necessary to properly maintain the engine. Go with their 7500 mile recommendation. The same applies to those that criticize the basic ACDelco oil filter. If it was so bad, GM would be paying to repair engines damaged by it - simply not happening.

The longer oil change intervals were initially driven by ?EPA to reduce pollution/oil consumption. I am sure that warranty claims would not be affected because proper maintenance affects lifetime of the vehicle vs warranty. Almost all warranties, including extended, are usually way expired before items such as extended or missed oil changes, Brand a or B filters, .... would come into play. If you want that 350,000 mile Toyota,... then proper maintenance is key, but to cover 3Y / 36K doesn't take too much. Current warranty periods only cover initial truly manufacturing defects.

Assuming I get mine in August, I will probably have somewhere in the range of 2k-4k miles on it before it is time for hibernation. I will change the oil before I let it sit for the winter - same as I have always done with my boat and motorcycles engines.

I change my oil at 3500 to 4000 miles on every vehicle I own.

Default Just the Facts

Changing the oil every 3500-4000 miles is like a push button telephone. It works just fine. But it is decidedly old school.

With synthetics I've settled in at every 5,000. It's just easy to keep track of it that way. Not quite sure on the C8, I'm guessing I'll end up putting a couple thousand miles on it before it goes away for winter and I'll change it before it goes to sleep. Acids form in the combustion process and I don't want it laying on metal parts for months.

Ok here I go gain for those that never heard my soapbox before.

Since ? 1976 I start my vehicles on normal ordinary motor oil to break in the engine. I have been doing my first oil change at 1,000 miles, followed by 5 more every 3,000 miles. Upon reaching 16,000 miles I dumo the ordinary motor oil and switched to Mobil-1 pure synthetic and then change ONLY the Oil Filter every 4,000 miles, until after 6 times (24,000 miles) I replaced the oil and Filter and started back with the filter every 4,00 miles. Back then Mobil 1 was good for 25,000 miles. It changed to 15,000 miles a few decades ago, but NO ONE TOLD ME! I was still doing my 24,000 mile routine. I guess before the 15,000 mile extended version came out, I was probably using standard Mobil-1 with a ? 5,000-7,500 lifespan? I have no idea, but all of my engines ran just fine with XXX,XXX miles on all of them. So, you make your own decisions, but for me it will always be Mobil-1. With GM starting my C8 on Mobil-1, I'll just follow their recommendations.

BTW, before that flashback time, I used toilet paper Oil Filters that purchased from Whitneys! It was an aluminum screw on case where the oil filter goes and all you did was change (replace) the toilet paper roll each time. It was standard 2 ply xxx sheets per roll. Today's, multi-size rolls would screw that to heck.
