What is the bolt head style used on the rear under car panel?? I have removed it before but would like to get the correct socket.

Are you talking about a C7 or C8? The C7 is just a standard hex socket. The C8 is a Torx socket.

Thank you, I was asking about a C8 and it looks like you are correct in it being a Torx socket. It just did not look quite right.

Look like these? Torx-plus low profile.

Can't they just stop coming up with new fasteners. I guess I will have to go buy yet more tools. I am running out of space. And Space Bags will not help with this issue.

Any idea what SIZES of Torx sockets are required for the C8? Particularly the underbody panels and DCT filter housing? I have a set I needed at some point, probably for the Volt. They are a small set containing E6, E7, E8, E10, E12, E14, & E16. I’m wondering if I need to get a bigger set. Nothing worse than starting to tear into something and find out you don’t own the proper tool, I’m a long way from the hardware store.

I read that the aluminum belly pan bolts takes an E16, couldn't prove it yet, but that's what I read. I have been out in the garage grinding down the nose of all my E Torx sockets since the bolts are low profile so I can get full contact.

So the “E” Torx sockets aren’t really correct? They need to be “low profile” Torx sockets? Figures, I guess I’ll add some more to my collection.

Looks like “EP” Torx sockets are the right ones?

I just took mine and put them on an extension and rotated it against my bench grinder wheel. Now they are flush and will work perfectly on low profile. I had mine from years ago for an AMG Mercedes I had. Had to dust them off, so I didn't care about grinding down their nose.

Here is a pic of what standard Torx sockets look like and my ground down version. I never have the occasion to use E Torx (until this car) anyway so I modded mine. If you were going to buy some because you have none, yes buy the EP Torx sockets. Lisle makes a set model 83100 you can get on Amazon for $30.

^^
There are two different inputs on the front C8 Z51 Brake Pad pins using Torx or Torx Plus sockets. One poster said he used a normal Torx 40 socket and it messed the bolt heads up (which it would.) But he said when he bought new bolts they were "standard Torx 40." Another poster said hey were Torx 40s. Would not surprise me as for my early 2014 Z51 the front pads used two side brake tap (used on some European cars) that was a PIA to deal with, doesn't appear the tape use on the C8 Z51 front pads is an issue. Later 2014's did not so Brembo made a change.

This is a pic I made that shows the Torx vs Torx Plus. Have standard Torx sockets BUT bought a Torx Plus 40 just in case!

Not Sure Which Is Correct- Now Have Both Sockets!

Interesting. Looks like GM was trying to limit access to this area to those with a full set of tools and hopefully the knowledge to go with it. Obviously, Corvette Forum members are in that category.

I just went out and pulled a belly pan bolt out of my car using my E16 ground down socket. Seemed to fit pretty well with no slipping. I agree with Jerry, if you don't have EP (external Torx Plus) sockets, they may be best. Mine fit well, I'll keep using them.

It is a Torx Plus low profile flange head bolt. The Torx Plus socket is NOT the same as a regular Torx socket. You will eventually round off the bolt head with the wrong socket! I have been trying unsuccessfully to get the GM part number for that bolt! If anyone has that number, or can get it, I would be grateful if you listed it. Thanks!

So EP16 is the correct socket, but E16 works?

I would get the correct socket, the E16 Torx is not the correct fit. The Torx Plus has a rounded tip star where where the regular Torx is more pointed and the drive depth on the Torx also requires that the socket go deeper on the bolt head. The low profile headed bolt we have does not allow that. Even with the E16 socket cut down, it still does not fit the bolt head correctly!

Paragon has a nice video on removing the underbody shield for a DCT filter change. Pretty sure those are E16 inverted torx.

The 2023 HTC Rear Shear Plate (22) Bolts, Use a "Eternal Torx Plus" EP14, NOT a E16. Regular External Torx Sockets Will Round Off The Torx Plus Heads-FYI
