I just gotta say, I'm pretty amazed by this. Sure this has been mentioned somewhere before, but when I had my Manual C7 the whole car would jump when it switched in and out of V8 vs V4 mode. I ended up changing the car so that it would only switch to V4 when I had it in economy mode so it didn't bother me so much. With the new car, I can't even tell when it's driving in which mode without looking. I don't feel the change and for better or worse driving down the road I can't hear the change either. I will admit if I could do it again, not sure I would have ordered the NPP exhaust though. I can barely hear it at all driving in the car. I can only hear it when I have the windows down and sitting at a stoplight. I'm still in the break in so I haven't gotten on the car at all, but it's way too quiet. And before you ask, I changed the car's z mode to be track exhaust which I use as soon as I turn on the car. I digress though, just wanted to say it's amazing how far the car has come with how smooth it is in trying to save gas.
Idk. My buddies 19 I can hear and feel when it drops out. On top of that when it drops out I can hear the lifter ticks too. Pretty much since he bought it actually. Only GM engines I don't notice it on are the high feature V6s in like the CTS and camaro. No lifter noise but you can hear the exhaust tone change slightly.
Allegedly the tuning for it with the DCT was improved. I'm not sure if this is the new style DOD on the lt2 or not. The proposed one could vcould umber of cylinders and could potentially jump down to 1 or 2 even iirc. It was in some GM press release somewhere about a year ago now I think.
OP I had the same experience in my M7 2014 Z51. It was very noticeable when it went into V4 mode and would only happen if I was in ECO mode (which was almost never)
Regarding the exhaust sound in the C8. The cabin is so quiet you do not hear the exhaust like you did in the C7. I ordered the base exhaust on my C8 as I knew I wanted to go aftermarket. At Carlisle a couple of weeks ago I had an AWE touring exhaust installed and it is crazy loud outside of the car (sounds amazing!) but inside it is not bad at all. Gives me the right amount of in-cabin sound.
The cold start every morning at 5:30 AM is probably not making my neighbors too happy, but it puts a smile on my face!
OP, are you sure you are really getting V4 operation. Z Mode by default has AFM off.
New for 2020 is the "Z" mode which will come from the factory set up as an extra sporty mode including shift schedules pulled from the "Track" mode, so that will be V8 only. Of course, you can customize "Z" mode any way you want, so if you elect another shift pattern, AFM will return.

I agree with this post completely. I took a friend of mine for a ride that sometimes drives his dads C7 and he was really impressed that he couldn't hear or feel it change between V4 and V8. I do have NPP and drive in my mode with the exhaust set on track, but it only goes into V4 off throttle cruising and so I still can't hear when it changes. I just know while just cruising along I'm getting around 30 mpg.

I think so at least. I still haven't actually read my book, but I press the Z mode button on the steering wheel and I have most of it set to sport but the exhaust set to track mode. I can see on the dash it switch between v8 and v4 depending on if i'm pressing the gas or cruising.

Nice to hear someone that has that exhaust. I've listened to it on their website but hearing a sound clip on a phone/computer vs IRL are 2 different things. I'd love for my car to be louder, damn the neighbors! I halfway considered trying to get it, but after spending 2k on this exhaust spending another 3-4k on that one installed.. I don't have that much free money laying around and would really **** off the wife heh. I'm already 'fighting' with her about putting protective film over the front end for 2100.

If you are seeing the V4 on the dash, then you have AFM on. I'll leave my Z Mode with the track shift schedules so I won't have AFM but I will set the other parameters for my preferred driving mode. Mostly Sport and Exhaust Track.

For the AFM to be off in Z mode, you have to switch the Powertrain setting to Track mode. This is the ONLY mode that disables the AFM (refer to page 187 in owners manual). The other option to disable the AFM is to drive in Manual mode (even in Tour) as this also disables AFM. I have been using manual mode to disable AFM while I am still in the break-in period (not sure that is good to do, but I have flashbacks of lifter issues on my SRT due to cylinder de-activation). And yes, that was a Dodge product.
Also, if you listen very closely, you can hear a subtle woosh noise when the AFM kicks in. No biggy, but I am not a fan of AFM due to the reason stated above.
My C7 A8 switched back and forth way too often. Completely ruined the experience. The M7 goes into V4 only in economy mode which I rarely use...but can’t tell without the V4 light. Barely feel it in my friends C8 too...
